Biggest Reasons Kerry Lost in 2004
Any viewpoints on this? When I reflect on the campaign last year I find the Kerry campaign was a total fiasco.

Re: Biggest Reasons Kerry Lost in 2004
Biggest reason that both he and Gore lost (in my opinion) was that neither came off as likeable. People might think Bush is an incompetent boob, but somehow he's managed to convince people that he's just like us (despite his privileged upbringing.)

Re: Biggest Reasons Kerry Lost in 2004
The biggest reason they lost was for policy reasons. People turned out in big numbers to vote against surrenderism, tax increases, and other liberal policies.
It is a mistake to always turn election results into personality contests. People vote politics a lot more than you may think. |

Policy was absolutely not the reason - it usually IS a personality contest, because the average person has minimal policy understanding. |

[/ QUOTE ] So why do the red and blue states remain almost the same election to election even when the candidates change? Because conservatives in red states want a conservative president, and vice versa. People in Massachusetts would vote for a moral midget, if he were a liberal running against a conservative. And the opposite is true in Utah. How do you think Kerry and Kennedy got to be senators in the first place? |

GOP rhetoric matches up with what most people in the South wants to hear, and Dems have the same effect on the coasts. You really think that the American public has a good grasp on policy? |

Re: Biggest Reasons Kerry Lost in 2004
People turned out in big numbers in many states due to the politics of fear and hate. The Right Wing political machine put anti-gay initiatives on the ballots across the country to make sure their conservative christian bigot base came out to vote..
States DO change who they vote for, just look at the slow take over of the conservative white voter in the south. Take your example of the republican governor in Masschussets (Mr. Weld), take a look at the recent take over in Colorado at the state level by the Democrats (despite Dobson's crew doing everything they can). The same thing can be said in Montana. |

[/ QUOTE ] Well, let me first tell you that there is nothing that I hate more than soilders and marriage. Oh wait, I actually hate life even more. But FYI, I was told face to face by a respected congressman that there is good reason to believe that it WAS the proposed ban on gay marriage which played a large role in bringing out the conservative base in Ohio, and securing the state for Bush. The GOP knows what its doing, gotta give them that. |

CNN exit polls found that most Bush supporters thought they were voting for the opposite position that Bush takes. I can't find the link to that one, but there's a lot more info here. |
