also, the fact that ortiz doesnt play the field and Arod does (also well) isnt trivial. We are not comparing Ortiz to Manny, we are talking about a guy who plays 3rd base, and does so at a well above average level.

i think that most people underestimate how big the defense gap is between ortiz and arod. not only does arod play the field, he plays it awesomely.

when arod saves a run by making a diving stop into foul territory and making a great throw to first in the 9th, is it any different than ortiz hitting a game tying solo hr in the bottom of the ninth?

I'd estimate that any "clutchiness" of Ortiz is madeup by about the ~30+ runs A-Rod saves over Ortiz in the field. That might be more, I don't really know. All of the studies I've seen that quantifies defensive runs as +/- average, IE "A-Rod is 15 runs above average at third base" which I think he was close to last year per UZR (and would essentially be gold glove).

I mean, this is a huge thing and it just isn't quantified in positional adjustments stats (batting runs quantified in terms of +/- the average player at their position).

The thing about arguing 'clutchiness' for Ortiz is that people who do make it sound as if Papi ALWAYS comes through in big situations, and that AROD never does, both of which are false, of course.

FWIW (nothing, imo) here are 'close and late' stats for Arod and Papi
Papi:/319/422/739!
Arod:313/439/567...both great.

Sorry if I'm repeating arguments, didn't read the whole thread.

I am listenting to the pregame show on EEI to maybe get an update on damon and jerry remy is being interviewed. now as far as TV color guys go, remy is top notch. so imagine the taste in my mouth when he says "the only player in the AL WITH A SHOT to beat ortiz is arod"

Sometimes Remy can be so insane.
