Plenty of reasons.

-Expansion
-More hitter friendly ballparks.
-The growing trend of "whip-saw," thin handled bats.
-The growing trend of weight-training
-Possible "juiced" balls.

But the fact is, the league batting average jumped significantly in 1993. Guys like Fred McGriff and Raffy get hurt by this because some of their best years came pre-explosion.
