Tim Legler on ESPN NBA coverage tries to become an honorary 'bro when he's talking to Steven Smith and Greg Anthony. He sounds very phony and contrived. Too bad, because he knows his hoops.

I guess there is such a thing as trying too hard. I know exactly what you're talking about... vexes the hell out of me watching that show. Though probably not as much as Steven A. vexes Greg Anthony.

I did something really similar recently. I was standing in a long post office line and this black woman just wanted to buy one stamp, but the machine wouldn't take her quarters. I offered her a couple quarters to exchange, and those didn't work either. Then I remembered I had a few stamps in my wallet, pulled them out and offered one to her. She made change for me and said "you al'ight." I said as she handed me the change (geez am I an idiot) "Ok, now we're straight up."

Straight up!? That doesn't even make any sense. We're straight, maybe, but I don't say that either. I wanted to smack myself.

I think she choked back a laugh.

Who wonders if you had to run ICM to figure out the EV of that play, or if you just intuitively could tell giving her a stamp would be the thing to do....

This would be an example of trying to hard. (Just picture Tim Legler saying it... hilarious.)

I just realized that Tim Legler needs his own reality television show where they only show episodes of him hanging out with black people. Why has this not been done yet???

</Bill Simmons impression>

Damn. I need to e-mail that to the Sports Guy.

Depends. Post your best "I'm white pretending to be a homie" line so that I can say you're trying too hard, and we'll talk.

I often find myself rhyming "ya" with "ya", aka Back that Azz up style. However, this isn't done in race specific conversations.

At work today I had to call the Philadelphia Pension Office to get some information for a client. I found myself talking to a woman who, from the sound of her voice, was almost certainly African-American. I was repeating back the address she gave me, made a mistake, she corrected me, and instead of saying "oh, my mistake" I said "aw, my bad." I NEVER say this. I have a feeling I subconsciously was trying to sound "hip" or something, I have no idea why. Does anyone else ever find themselves unconsciously making stupid little changes to their language or behavior when talking to someone of a different race/culture?

i just dont talk to anybody who isnt white
