Actually, I leave it on most of the time for about the same reasons, but the minute the chat becomes nasty, abusive, distracting, etc, off it goes.

Yeah, that's reasonable; but if I can, I tend to just block the chat of the idiots, rather than turning it off for the whole table. If that's not possible, I'll try to put up with it. And if I think it's obnoxious enough to drive the fish away, I'll report it to support/abuse.
