People in this thread have a pretty loose definition of "must have".

I have a few hundred DVDs by now. The ones I consider must haves are the ones I would immediately replace if there was a fire and my entire collection burned up. These are movies that I enjoy watching over and over, they never really get old.

In no particular order:

2001: A Space Oddessey
The Usual Suspects
Pulp Fiction
Office Space
Unforgiven
Braveheart
Shawshank Redemption
Lock, Stock & Two Smoking Barrels
Band of Brothers Collection

i think it's turning into "movies i like" rather than MUST OWN DVDs. about 90% of the movies here are worth watching, and maybe worth watching a few times, but certainly not necessary for a DVD collection.

Dumb and Dumber? Come on man, that's not a MUST own DVD...Be Cool? I loved that movie but I'm not sure I would ever watch it more than twice.

Let's get back on topic ppl, MUST own, not MUST see or w/e you are thinking

On that note, "Sin City." Best comic book movie IMO, I know many ppl believe otherwise and that's cool.

All movie threads on OOT turn into "what I like."

I'd say at most 80% here are very good, and many don't bear repeated viewings. There is some serious junk recommended here.

I agree with what you're saying, generally. Of course "must have" means different things to different people. The way I looked at it was movies that I repeatedly watch again and again, not necessarily critically acclaimed master pieces. I'd imagine other people feel similarly about certain movies and that's why they listed them. Still, there are a few picks here that seem pretty much random.

Repeatedly watch again and again, I'd agree with. But if it doesn't mean more than that, it immediately becomes "my favorite stuff," which might as well just be a collection of random movies happily including total crap. I like some total crap quite a bit -- lots of cheesy horror movies, for instance -- but I didn't put Count Yorga, Vampire or The Incredible Dr. Phibes in the running for must-have's. I think you gotta pull out the big artillery for that stuff, flicks you don't have to be a cultist or stoned to love.
