DMB sucks, they dumped their toxic waste into our river and showed no remorse for it. Green day just sucks because their music is horrible. Weezer is pretty good but not a generation defining group at all. I'd go more with Pearl Jam, Stone Temple Pilots, Red Hot Chili Peppers, and Nirvana as groups that stand out from this era.

For clarity's sake, I'm a big DMB fan. I wouldn't say they defined a generation. Pop music tends to define a generation, regardless of whether it sucks or not. Some would say that DMB is pop music, but I would disagree. Until the past couple of years, they didn't get much mainstream radio play and only had a few singles that had any staying power. The only ones I can think of are Crash, American Baby, Everyday, Crush, I Did It (blegh) and the Space Between (blegh). 6 singles doesn't define a generation.

It's incredibly sad to say, but this generation has been more defined by the Backstreet Boys, Britney Spears, etc than any decent bands. I'd give a slight nod to the entire grunge movement (Pearl Jam, Nirvana, Soundgarden, Alice in Chains), but regardless of whether it sucks or not...this has been the era of teeny bopper pop music.

To say that Green Day defines a generation is just sad. Dookie was semi-groundbreaking in terms of its sound, but the band collectively has very little talent. How many three chord/power chord songs in 4/4 can you possibly write before it all sounds the same? Time will tell.

In the case of GD, a little more than one album's worth.

They had nothing to do with it...it was a bus driver, who was fired. They also donated $200,000 to environmental efforts in that area. They barely took any heat from the media and could easily have dodged it by blaming the driver and making a public display of firing him. What else could they possibly have done?

Yeah, that river was pretty clean before that, huh?

Think about the fact that when I think 70's, I think totally sweet rock 'n roll, but there was definately disco music too. Every generation had good and bad, to some people the 70's were defined musically by totally sweet rock 'n roll, to some it was defined by totally awful disco sludge.

I agree, and I don't even like Weezer. Blue album intrigued me for a couple months, but I got over it. I guess I haven't always been down, down with either.
