Re: Best Classical music piece of all time
Sometimes I think we're affected by what we first heard. I don't like very many of the von Karajan recordings. I can barely hear anything at all in his 7th finales. I think he misses so many of the details. And Giulini was probably my favorite conductor. (He performed miracles with our previously sloppy and amateurish L.A. Phil when he came here.)
I agree with you, however, on Bernstein's 5th. He thought it was West Side Story. |

Re: Best Classical music piece of all time
When Prager talks classical music (I know he sometimes conducts), I can listen to him. Sort of like when George Will talks baseball.

Re: Best Classical music piece of all time
Watched the movie "10" last night. When Dudley Moore is in bed with Bo Derek she makes him start Bolero over again because she wants to make sure they finish while the music is still playing. So he restarts the record and tells him to hurry back to bed.
He tells her not to worry, it's a long piece. |

For sleeping, try Chopin's "Berceuse." A dream in music.

For sleeping, try Chopin's "Berceuse." A dream in music. [/ QUOTE ] Turns out it's called Berceuse in D flat, Op 57. Was able to find it here and I agree it's very good. I might even have it among my five or six Chopin CDs, currently scattered all over the place. Someday when I have time to keep up with the respondents I'd like to start a "best music to sleep to" thread and I'll start it with this. Meanwhile, I've switched from nature sounds to "Musical Evenings With the Captain", but I need a change since I'm finally on book 20 in the O'Brien series. The whole point will be that I not only need music to sleep to, but music that won't drive my gf/future wife crazy. ~ Rick PS Thanks for the gift that screams "Nebiolo". When I get time I'm going to run the first page through one of those Italian to English translators and see how it compares. I have my doubts since "Primo Comando" doesn't sound like "Master AND Commander". Maybe Gabe knows, he's studying Italian. |

Tough one. I'd say Beethoven's 9th. I keep coming back to that one, and it always does the trick.

Can't believe it hasn't been mentioned but my favorite has to be
Camina Bueno a Fortano (sp?) By Karl Orff. Most dramatic piece of music ever written. |
