Ozzy Osbourne deserves a mention, especially if you get to include Black Sabbath material. And they not be supercool but Aerosmith has so many songs that are good. Tool is up there. Also NIN. And no one has mentioned the eagles.

They are not near to being one of my favorite bands but I don't understand how the answer to this question could be anyone other than The Beatles. They have it all. If you feel like gitty pop tunes, they've got it. Previous generations could find dance songs among their discography. Beautiful ballads, they have many of those. Bizarre enchanting abstract songs, they've made an album or two full of them. They also have a great number of feet thumbing rock songs. What else do you need? It is also incredibly interesting to hear them grow from teen idols to some of the greatest song writers ever.

I wholeheartedly agree, however, I still think the answer to the question is The Beatles.

i considered the beatles. they have a large and varied catalog, but i'm certain i would get sick of them. i'm not sick of the smiths, and i've intentionally replayed their music orders of magnitude more than the beatles.
