It isn't a question of what people do or are able to do. It's a question of what they ought to do. When you define morality as treating others decently you are close to the Biblical statement of the Golden Rule. But if this rule doesn't come from God and isn't enforced by God, the only alternative is might makes right. Why should I follow the Golden Rule if I don't want to? [/ QUOTE ] Absolute nonsense. The reason is that it behooves you as an individual. The dependence of man on other men leads to the Golden Rule. There's absolutely no need for a invisible nanny-in-the-sky to enforce it as a sound principle for man's behavior. The Golden Rule is in an individual's best interests because he needs other men to thrive, as much as they need him. eastbay
