I don't want schools to teach tolerance. I want them to teach math, science, history, reading and writing. Through discussion and debate involving these subjects, the realities and effects of intolerance can be examined.

So a video of the history of intollerance is okay? Or even a video of current events (that involve intollerance) is okay? You seem to be splitting hairs here to me (something I haven't seen from you too much in the past.) Schools can teach and debate the realities and effects of intolerance in a historical context, but there is some imaginary line out there (that is clear to you, but it is honestly unclear to me) where they are now "teaching tolerance," which is a bad thing.

I heard this line once and it often comes to mind in discussion about education:

Everyone who has walked by a school thinks they know how to run one.

If it's my kid going to the school, I *am* the final arbiter of what they do and do not teach. But, that's probably why I support separation of education and state.

It's a nice thought. It's not true, but still a nice thought. You are the final arbiter of what is taught at home. The school board is the final arbiter of what is taught in the school. You might cast a vote, but you aren't the final arbiter.

[/ QUOTE ] Parents have a syndrome. As someone in high school (a very good, rich public high school), there are many, many parents who believe that their kid can do anything, is entitled to anything, and can do no wrong, essentially.

This is why some parents should not teach, and they shouldn't have much of a say either. And also, some parents are not educated enough to teach, and are not rich enough to get into private schools. That's my support for public schooling.

To Beerfund: We know what cokc, pu$$y, and boobs are. We know how to get it going on. Don't assume your high-school kid doesn't know what gay and lesbian sex actually consists of.

If by I you mean the community then perhaps OK (still debatable) if you literally mean "I" then you should homeschool your kids.

Incidentally, I think that you cannot separate education and state (unless you abolish public education) but I think that education should be more local. It is insane that DC has a secy of education.
