People need to quit being so fucking judgemental. Some of the advice in this thread is spot on, some of it sucks, but ultimately it's your life and you'll have to figure out what's important to you.

Having also graduated from Duke, I can empathize with the stress that comes with being surrounded by hypercompetitive overachieving types planning their careers in the exciting worlds of management consulting or investment banking (your choice!). It sounds like you're rejecting that path, which to me is a sign of mental health and a well-rounded intellect, but that's just my personal bias.

Anyway, putzing around after college is a time-honored tradition. Not everyone is a career-oriented go-getter Type A personality, especially when they're 21 or 22.

I'd insert some personal anecdotes here, but really, what's the point.

Yeah. Take advice from a guy who has a squirrel for a daily companion. Veritas, fiat lux, and all the rest.

Nobody will care about your degree, and your 150k spent on education is wasted.

Ya, bc a Duke education is all about getting a job....

Not to sound pompous but the more posts TT makes the clearer it becomes he indeed did not go to University...

I dont mean to sound condescending in anyway but you have a car as your screename and seem to think of educational value in terms of $ and cents ....

You don't sound pompous. You sound like an asshole.

Everyone brings their own perspective to questions like this. It's not surpprising that TT feels that dealing poker after going to Duke is a waste, nor should it be surprising that I (a Duke grad with similiar career/existential issues as the original poster) value a Duke education greatly even though I didn't go the traditional corporate route post-college. This is more a factor of our respective experiences than some overriding truth.

If people really want to help other people out they can be honest about their own experiences and refrain from being so goddamned judgemental. This goes both for the original poster's questions and in general.

To some extent, we all rationalize the choices we make to convince ourselves and others we had it all figured out anyway.

Hmm....

I dont see how I sound like an ahole....

The point is alot of people in the US see college as a job-training course.

People that havent attended University in my experience tend to believe this very strongly while those who attended tend to believe otherwise...(espeically if they were liberal arts majors or got non professional degrees)

if you are just a wannabe professional poker player, don't be a dealer just so you can be near the action. for the love of god, get a good job and play recreationally.

In no particular order:

1. B school; summer interns for casino management; make something of yourself.

2. buy backpack; travel the world

....

1000. move to LV; go to dealer school
