I’ve played in many local and national tournaments where if you are in a hand and ask a player how much they have they just smile and stare at you.

Hell yeah, I do that too. That's right about when my opponent looks at the dealer and says, "May I have a chip count, please?" I would like to know the name of the card room that won't accomidate this.

edit: ok... I guess this is simply an argument of semantics.

Everyone!:

Stop calling it a rule, start calling it a "de-facto standard". I know that's harder to type and possibly even harder to remember but lets face it, it's not a *rule*
<snicker>

edit again: A quick use of the profile link lets me know that this is a Politics/OOT poster that's just here to rile us up. EOF.

Yup, what’s next? "Double Secret Poker Probation”? “ I win every hand” – It’s not written down anywhere but that’s just the defacto standard, so just fold and give me your money.
<snort>

Where I post is not germane to this, but since you seem to feel the need to attack me personally – enjoy.

Huh? That's not a game, it's a robbery.

If someone actually refused to give me a chip count in a home tournament I would request the table give me enough time to count them myself. Since I'm not allowed to touch them this is going to take awhile. That's going to piss everyone off.

My observation that you do most of your posting in non poker forums here at 2+2 was just that, an observation. It is not an attack. From my experience, people from OOT seem to love to rile up other forums. Yes, you are judged by the company you keep. I'm a judgemental bastard.

Thanks for pointing this out. As of NOW, it's an actual rule at my game. Lying about your actual count will incur a 15 minute penalty.

True but the point is the same, someone somewhere took a courtesy, or house custom and decided that they are forever entitled to it.

And if the answer was “hey, it’s your bet, you’re entitled to a count if your opponent goes all in, not before. If you want to put him all-in, then you go all-in or make a large wager, quit delaying the game and make a bet.”?

You’re short sighted and closed-minded too, you also have big feet.

As it should be – If it’s a required action – it’s a written rule.

I'd estimate his chips (lets say 365) and say, "I bet about 365."

As my wife can tell you, I have *average* sized feet, thank you for pointing that out to the whole forum!

What's missing from this discussion is any explanation as to why it's worth being an asshat about providing a player with your chip count if requested. What is the edge here of not doing so, other than to piss off another player and maybe take him off his game? Are you hoping he miscounts and only bets half of your stack? What the hell?

It sounds like those who refuse to offer chip counts are just being bitter about the fact that another player is putting him at a decision for all his chips. It's cheap and denigrates the game.

Please show me where in the TDA rules it says that.

[/ QUOTE ]

If you were to pull this crap at my game, you'd never be invited back, because the TDA doesn't require me to invite you back.

OK let’s back up a bit. It’s not just about the fact that a player is no more “entitled” to a chip count before they bet then they are “entitled” to see one of your hole cards.

We started enforcing that this is not a rule or entitlement to actually speed up the game because we had a group of “poker punks” that had started playing at our tournaments where every deal it would be the same little mini-drama: Poker Punk” I think I’ll put you all-in” (non binding statement) < waits, looks at opponent, looks at hole cards> Poker Punk ”how much do you have?” <opponent now sighs and count chips – time passes> Player “I’ve got 3540”. Poker Punk < waits, looks at opponent, looks at hole cards> “I fold/check/bet 100” anything except 3540 or all-in. We were getting 2 orbits per blind change and it was irritating everyone. When we would tell the poker punks to knock it off, they’d cry “but I’m entitled to a chip count!” So we did a little research – We were surprised to find out that this was not a general rule.

To me if this is a house rule it’s like the “I want to see his cards” rule. If you do it once or twice during a long session or tournament it’s not a big deal. If you do it every other deal, then you are the one being cheap, slowing down and degenerating the game.

I have a challenge for you-

Go to a casino and play in a poker tournament. Refuse to give a chip count when asked.

The dealer will happily do it for you.

Done it many time, it depends on whether it's a house rule or not.

If it is fine, if not, they don't get one.
