I got 5000 the first time I did it - then looked at it for a sec and saw that didn't make sense. Guess I'm one of the dumb 98%.

Honestly if this was a question where I was told that i had to answer it as quickly as possible(like if I was heads up against someone in a contest) I would of said 5000 , but since it was "on paper" I was able to get 4100 because I caught my self changing the 20 and 30 to 200 and 300.

yea, thats what i think happens. cuz when i first did. i didnt reread or anything. jst did the math in my head as i read it and as soon as i finished reading, said what i had in my head, which was clearly 5000. it seemed so easy at first

wait, u wrote this math problem down and didnt do it in ur head?

the whole idea of why this works is cuz u do the math in ur head and as quickly as possible

By "on paper" I meant on the computer screen. I didn't write it down. I meant that I caught the mistake in my head as I was adding it up.The whole thing took me about 10 seconds, I was just stating that I understand why some people could get it wrong.
