Although I agree with you, Duckstabber, that New Orleans is far away from top on the list of where I would send my aid (rich country, functioning emergency services, capital available etc.) and I would not contribute in this tourney, it is nice that those who feels its close to their heart contributes.

Default For those who were out

It's funny how when the Tsunami tourney was announced there was not one negative comment, yet when our own people are going through hell there are more than a few negative comments. Personally I don't give a rats ass whether you give money or not. If $10-20 dollars is too much for you then I hope your never in the situation that those people affected by Hurricane Katrina are in.

These people's lives have been completely flipped upside down. Most of them lost everything they own and are homeless, even those with insurance still lose. They are refugees. The kids is what I think about the most. They have no home, no school, no playground, they are wading around in vile filth, they have no drinking water, no food. After hurricane andrew people lived in tents for a year.

COUNT ME OUT!

PEOPLE DIE ALL THE TIME, I suppose I should be asking for a check when my uncle died of cancer last year

Are we BITTER?

[/ QUOTE ]NO JUST STATING THE FACTS, if people gets killed in a hurricane, its their own damn fault, everyone knew it was coming

[/ QUOTE ]

No kidding. I mean who can't just up and move? (Peace John Nickle had a real good post on this.) This whole compassion thing is overrated. Some Jews are going to get upset with me over this (especially my mom and dad), but why didn't they just leave the concentration camps? Did they think the gas chambers were for someone else? I mean they had to see it coming. I mean one day your father is alive and next day he is dead. Get the fck out?

BTW...I am down for the tourney. And if i win I am donating to the guy whose uncle died. BTW, didn't he know the cancer was going to kill him? He really should have gotten rid of it.

I've got a pretty good sense of humor/sarcasm detector but the Jew comment went a little far.

I guess 54 (yes, that is not a typo) members of my Dad's family had it coming for living in Warsaw, Poland.

Unfortunately, you often see the true nature of people when a disaster strikes. Some will go out of their way to help no matter where it occurs.

Others just like to smirk and say they had it coming. We should feel sorry for people who exhibit that trait.

I'm with you and just want to help the child whose family was killed by the storm. I don't think about whether that child came from a middle class background and wonder why her parents didn't set up a trust fund for just such an emergency

Show me some numbers, Hardinda...

Side note on private contributions
As an aside, it should be emphasized that the above figures are comparing government spending. Such spending has been agreed at international level and is spread over a number of priorities.

Individual/private donations may be targeted in many ways. However, even though the charts above do show US aid to be poor (in percentage terms) compared to the rest, the generosity of the American people is far more impressive than their government. Private aid/donation has been through charity of individual people and organizations though this of course can be weighted to certain interests and areas. Nonetheless, it is interesting to note for example, per latest estimates, Americans privately give at least $34 billion overseas — more than twice the US official foreign aid of $15 billion at that time:

International giving by US foundations: $1.5 billion per year
Charitable giving by US businesses: $2.8 billion annually
American NGOs: $6.6 billion in grants, goods and volunteers.
Religious overseas ministries: $3.4 billion, including health care, literacy training, relief and development.
US colleges scholarships to foreign students: $1.3 billion
Personal remittances from the US to developing countries: $18 billion in 2000
Source: Dr. Carol Adelman, Aid and Comfort, Tech Central Station, 21 August 2002.
While Adelman admits that “there are no complete figures for international private giving” she still says that Americans are “clearly the most generous on earth in public — but especially in private — giving”. Hence these numbers and claims may be taken with caution, but even then, these are high numbers.

hi jon,

i logged in today to try and find some info related to some friends i am trying to find in biloxi.

5 minutes ago, and before i saw this thread, jason holdem emailed and asked about this.

i have written an email to one of my contacts proposing a private tourney where all winners would donate at least half, as long as the site will also match this amount.

i would guess that i will hear back in a day or two and will keep everyone posted. you and i can do this together with the help of some other volunteers. i think a $10 R&A may be the way to go, but we can discuss this if i can get the site to agree.

you are a good man. let's see if we can make this happen. fukc the whiners. they are same people who accused me and lee of running the tsunami tourney for affiliate and sign-up purposes. i think the problem is that this is a US based disaster and many think FEMA will cover it all.

well, there was terrible poverty in middle mississippi before katrina, and those people are in great need. they never saw the benefits of casinos, and now they don't have homes and will probably be the last to get fresh drinking water.

hopefully we can do *something*. in the meantime, my prayers are with all that were hit.

edit: to fix the spelling of your first name. i'll be in touch.

ok, GREAT news!

paradise has stepped in and welcomed our efforts.

they are willing to pull 50% of the prize pool and MATCH this 100% and make the donation direct to the red cross (or wherever we decide). those willing to donate more than 50% of their winnings will be able to make a transfer to a special account and that will be added to the fund.

those wanting to donate, that can't play, can either transfer me the funds (which will be matched), or they can buy in and just not show. the problem with this would be that it limits the donation to $10, but we will take it!

check your PM jon. now we have to decide when to do this and what format.

thanks paradise!!

I don't have a problem transfering you funds if I cannot play, but you know there's gonna be someone who bitches about this. Since there's going to be a "special account" for transfering more of your winning if you choose so, why not just make that special account public when it comes that time.
