You have to have two live cards to win.

"I play the board". *muck*

Be careful with absolute statements.

If you muck your hand without turning them up, playing the board or not, you will not get a quarter. If you dont believe me, try it.

Wrong.

And from Robert's Rules:

9. You must declare that you are playing the board before you throw your cards away. Otherwise, you relinquish all claim to the pot.

Please stop now.

Seconded.

(Of course, if 'accountant' wanted to parse "win" as "not split," an argument against my original comment could be made that way. But, since I parse "win" as "get pushed chips once the action is closed," I'd disagree with that as well.)

If you've ever played poker in Black Hawk, CO, particularly at The Lodge, you know there is a certain population of players there who like to get excited and pound the table with their bets, their showdowns, everything. Once upon a time, one of these guys was the 'loser' in a bad beat jackpot hand and slammed his cards down. One of them caught an edge and bounced off the table. The jackpot was nullified. I'm not sure what the jackpot was at that time, but it's not uncommon for it to go over $100k and I've seen it over $140k.

Be careful when you show your big hands down.

A good rule of thumb is to never more than turn your cards up, place your fingers on them in a manner which allows for everyone to clearly read them all the while not letting them get "killed", and then trade your exposed hand for the pot. Anyting else is just asking for a problem at sometime in some room somewhere...

I have seen players sitting next to each other, slam their cards down at a showdown, only to have them mix and the dealer/floor is left with trying to figure out who had what cards.

I have seen players muck the winner hand only to lose the pot becuase some angle shooter held their hand and now that the winner is in the muck showdown the now "best" hand and take the pot.

Or just like in the OP, someone got carried away and ended up with a card on the floor and lost a pot.

All of these can be handled be the floor/security cams, but why ever, EVER let yourself get into this spot in the first place?!?!? Always PROTECT your hand!

Turn your hand up where it is visible to all players, and keep control of it until the dealer has killed all losing hands. If the dealer goes for your hand while another one is face up or yet to be turned up, stop them and ask them to kill the other hand.

If you toss your hand away from you, you no longer have control of your hand and are asking for trouble. While accidents/mistakes are rare, why take the chance?

Every casino has their own set of rules. They do not all follow Robert's Rules. To do something "cute" and then hope to rely on a Rule that the casino might not follow is just asking for a result that will become the topic of yet another "Was this the proper ruling?" thread.

Caveat emptor.
