you forgot to specify game, betting strucutre, how many players etc. but in short, if you play w/ your cards face up every hand expect to lose

I voted that I'd lose basically everytime. It would be different if my opponent didn't know what i had.

Poppycock. There are very few opponents I would even be worried about in this game.

In order to win, they would need you to laydown the best hand at least 20% of the time. Otherwise they would get badly beaten. And although their bluffs may sometimes induce you to pay them off with an inferior hand, they will also get caught bluffing at least as frequently.

I find the poll results shocking. I think if you don't think you can win this game you need to work on your play. Alot.

[/ QUOTE ]

You are probably right about my game Tilt, but I'm guessing that the villain shouldn't be bluffing a lot, and it's a pretty close call who will win. I think though that if you don't bluff a lot, and bet when you are ahead or have a good drawing chance that this would outweigh the fact that you have got 88.

I notice that Meow, and you are going to give it a try, would be interested in hearing the results. I must admit though I never thought along the lones of 88 being in the top x% of hands, but instead thought of the problem as being that you have imperfect information, whereas the vilain knows exactly where he stands at all times. This would outweigh your advantage of a good starting hand.

Well i was playing 1/2 NL at the casino last night, of the 4 hands i played in over 3 hours, 2 were pocket 8s, somehow, they were good both times yet i let them go before finding that out. Couldnt believe when on the river, last to act raises 20, theres 4 to a flush on the board, hes got none of it, just pocket 5s, and a guy calls with a 4 to make the baby flush, the other hand i let go, so many overcards on he board. on the river, same situation, last to act raises and guy calls with pair of 6's, just loosing to the raisers 7s

I would probably lose at no-limit most of the time (depends on how many big blinds in the stacks to start), but I think I'd win consistently in a limit game. I'd put in one raise preflop each time, and go by the number of overcards to determine how aggressive to be post-flop.

This statement is technically incorrect. If you're bluffing in a game-theoretically optimal fashion, your opponent loses the same amount of money whether he calls or folds.

[/ QUOTE ]

It's been a while since I had any game theory, but that is not correct as far as I remember.
Your optimal strategy have different outcomes dependant on your opponents actions. If you both play optimal, there will be a saddle point with a value based on the circumstances.
If your opponent doesn't follow his optimal strategy, each of your actions will have the possibility of an added value.

On the topic - I answered no, as I thought it was NL - under those circumstances, I think you'd have a very hard time winning, given the fact that you don't have any implied odds.

what type of a question is this? this is basically can i guess correct....if he knows you have 88 he can wait till a flop come s AKQ and how can you call that? I just don't see any possible strategy that could win in this other then you making a good call (which i actually think is more luck) someone who voted i could beat this game please tell me your strategy.. I think only a pro could maybe win this HU because he would have to basically have to read him like a book to win...

a better question is how small of a pair could we have to make this a winning proposition? My gut says it's around JJ.
