Although a certain rating does not automatically make you a GM, 2500 is about the cutoff point for GMs. Dynasty is correct that you need to play in certain matches to earn norms

Techinical question. What ratings would a person have to have to be a Grand Master? I heard Harrington is a 2,400 rated chess player. How far is he from GM status? I heard Ciaffone was 2,000 rated. And I know many people at between 1,500 to 1,900. Do you think these people could beat 3-6 within 2 weeks after reading SSHE? [/ QUOTE ] I searched for harrington, but cant find him in the Elo list. Every game played since 1966 is rated there.

Of course Dynasty is correct, but the ratings I gave are good approximations. I didn't think it would be appropriate for me to go into detail about norm requirements and so on. In general if someone is at or above the ratings I listed, they will USUALLY be an IM or GM.

And, on further thought, I think you actually need a minimum FIDE rating to get the IM title (in addition to the norms).
