Re: The new trend at my casino
Yikes, you're right.
This whole thread should be in game theory where the real wonks could get to work on it. |

Re: The new trend at my casino
David's assertion in HEFAP is that in a game with a lot of extra blinds, you could easily make a sufficient profit with the extra action generated by your premium hands. This is no longer true if you are forced to post the larger blinds as well; your cost to wait for those cards is too high.
So his comment that you should play tighter, doesn't apply if you are posting larger blinds as well. |

Re: The new trend at my casino
[ QUOTE ]
The 50x BB example you described is useful, but in the final analysis (reductio ad absurdum) reduces to a ten handed game with one blind, and no preflop or postflop betting at all. You may call or fold preflop. In such a game, all players play their hands according to strict preflop equity. [/ QUOTE ] You got it. Great analysis. [ QUOTE ] K9 would _perhaps_ be a play in that game. According to my simulation, K9s,K9o wins approx 11.8% of the time against 9 random hands. However, in general those who call will hold slightly better than average hands. Some hands are still folds; 32 wins in the neighborhood of 6.5% in that game; T4 wins 7%. So I can't say for sure regarding your proposition. [/ QUOTE ] Perhaps I wasn't clear. I'm not talking about playing K9 from all positions, merely from the button after it's folded to you. -eric |

Re: The new trend at my casino
[ QUOTE ]
You should play looser postflop, because the pot is bloated. But that reasoning doesn't apply preflop. [/ QUOTE ] Good point, you're right. Perhaps it's only the mix of hands that changes. I'll have to think about it some more. thanks, eric |

Re: The new trend at my casino
[ QUOTE ]
[ QUOTE ] I agree that the 'tighter facing a straddle' argument is only applicable if you are not also straddling. [/ QUOTE ] I don't see how the strategy of playing in hands where someone else straddles could possibly be affected by whether you straddle or not in a later hand. The EV of each decision in the current hand will be the same regardless. [/ QUOTE ] You're absolutely right, it doesn't make a difference. However, if you are not straddling, then you can afford to pass up marginally profitable situations and just play strong hands, and still make money. You can't do this if you are also straddling. HPFAP "proves" that tight is right by showing that you can play tighter and still turn a profit. It's up for debate whether you can play as many hands or even more hands and make even more money. -eric |
