There are a couple of places I like to go. On 169h and broadway, up by columbia presbyterian, coogan's is very good, and so is a new place they opened up on 3rd ave. in the 90s called parrot bay. There are a couple of places in brooklyn heights i like, namely the henry street ale house and eamon's.

Doc Watson's is a great place to pick mid 30 year old women. Consider it a diamond in the rough

[ QUOTE ] (El Cantinero, I think) has a good happy hour. [/ QUOTE ] yeah up stairs...That still goes on? [/ QUOTE ] Yup, I'm not sure which nights. I really only go there on weekdays, but it may also be weekends. I also really like the beef/chicken/shrimp fajitas at this place. |

Apple on Waverly [/ QUOTE ] I was there tonight and drank lots of Bass and Brooklyn Lager on tap. Great bar. EDIT: I rarely eat here, but tonight I shared lemongrass chicken (basically just grilled chicken in a spicy bbq sauce) and tempura bananas with a girl I was with. They were both really good. |

Wow, this thread makes me feel so old (which I am). There would have been a time not so long ago when I could have rattled off a litany of really cool bars. Now, most of those bars are closed or have become so lame as to deserve a good torching.
I don't go out to bars/lounges nearly as much as I used to. That said, the places that I really like of late are: Flatiron Lounge -- Betw. 5th and 6th around 17th St. Nice Art Deco feel. Specialty cocktails are good but way expensive. Pegu Club -- West Houston St. Based on an English officer's bar in Rangoon from colonial days this place also offers fairly pricey cocktails. However, the vibe is pretty good (and the drinks are very strong) and it is not pretentious as one might think. For more down to earth pubs I like Central Bar on E. 9th (betwn. 3rd and 4th) and Puck Fair at Houston and Lafayette. I regularly stop in at Otto on 8th st. for a quartino of good and not too expensive Italian wine (and the pizza there is great if you have time for dinner). |

its a toss up of two bars. I was in nyc awhile back, and rmarotti took me to both. The first was a bar with a genuine two-for-one deal, and an awesome bartender named rachel who would allow me to order two double bourbons. Ive learned that women named rachel are something i need to watch out for.
the second was sometime later in the same evening, and i remember very little about this abr except i was asking nearly everyone for pot, and the bartender (who i like to pretend was a member of the russian mafia) walked up to me with a wadded up paper towel. At first i was confused, then i started tipping even better. Ah, the memories. peace john nickle |
