An example of how the FAQ could be changed...
Here's my (humble ) example of how the FAQ could be written differently. This is by no means complete, just some ideas.
Q: What is this forum for? It's for discussion of NL and PL Texas Holdem at $400 max buy in and below. People post hands they've played or watched, and invite feedback. You then get to see how other players (some expert, some good, some beginners) would have played the same hand. Higher stakes ($2/$4 NL and above), go in the Mid-High Forum. Q: There is a hand I would like to submit for analysis, how should I do this? A: New posters are always welcome. Please format the hand before posting. This makes it easier to read, and increases the chances of good posters responding. An example of good formatting: <insert example here [img]/images/graemlins/spade.gif[/img] [img]/images/graemlins/heart.gif[/img]> There's a converter(link) for this purpose. Cut and paste into the converter, then cut and paste the output into your post. <extra instructions here for non convertible hands> Q: Damn, I just got outdrawn for a monster pot. Do you want to hear about it? A: There's nothing to be learnt from a bad beat. Please don't post bad beats, they usually get ignored or flamed. Q: I'm new to poker, what advice do you have? Three pieces of advice: 1. Start small ($25NL and below) and be patient. Many of the best players started off in micro stakes and stayed there for a long time before moving up. 2. Have an adequate bankroll (20x the buyin) 3. Read some poker books and forums regularly. Study the game. It's the best way to improve. Q: Are there any good poker books you can recommend for No Limit or Pot Limit? Harrington on Holdem Small Stakes Holdem by Ed Miller Theory of Poker by David Sklansky. Super System by Doyle Brunson PL & NL Poker by Bob Ciaffone & Stewart Reuben Q: How much can I win if I'm good? How much do people win at each level? - For a solid, experienced player, 20 Big Blinds/100 hands is currently sustainable at small stakes NL. At higher stakes this number decreases. - For a player with some skill and experience, 5-15 BB/100 hands is a likely win rate - For a new player, a negative win rate is likely unless you play tightly at the lower stakes ($25NL and preferably below) These are long term winrates. Be aware that poker can have large fluctuations, both up and down, over the short term. You need a bankroll to counter this. Q: What is a proper bankroll for each limit? A: 20 full buyins is recommended, especially when starting out. Limit: $0.01/$0.02 | Needed: $100 Limit: $0.05/$0.10 | Needed: $200 Limit: $0.10/$0.25 | Needed: $500 Limit: $0.25/$0.50 | Needed: $1000 Limit: $0.50/$1.00 | Needed: $2000 Limit: $1.00/$2.00 | Needed: $4000 Limit: $2.00/$4.00 | Needed: $8000 Q: I'm pretty sure that so-and-so is giving awful advice, should I trust it? A: There are many regulars on the forum who are winning players and post good advice. Other players are just starting out and don't have as much experience. Use your judgment. etc etc |

You suck, Zorro. Your avatar, your style, your thoughts on checkraising, it's all strictly bush league. A joke, is what you are.
(Those are all quality edits of the FAQ, btw.) |

Re: SSNL F.A.Q. v2.0
Great post, Skeme. It's informative and coherent, but like all great works, it needs revisions. If we work together on this, we can create a VERY useful thread. Put the egos and bitterness aside and let's make this thing work.
I've got a few things I'd like to bring up. First, can we add something about note taking? I think this is an important habit that isn't talked about enough. I'm very interested to hear what others document about their opponents. How do you abbreviate notes? What are important tendencies to document? I haven't searched for previous threads so I don't know what's out there, but I think something about this topic should end up in the sticky. Second, how about some advice on interpreting PokerTracker stats? We've all bought the program, but I can guarantee most aren't getting their money's worth as far as statistic comprehension goes. I bet there's some threads in the software forum that we could link to. I'll look around if there's any interest. I know this is very general, but it's just something to consider. What other concepts could be added to improve the thread? |

SSNL is only really tangentially related, I think.

Would it be worth making a list of good posters so that newbies know who's advice to look for? [/ QUOTE ] I think this could actually be counter productive for someone trying to learn (at least at the SSNL level). Some people would rather just be told what to do instead of actually taking the time to actually think through why a certain line might be better than another. It could lead to people just taking someones word and they won't actually understand the why. And hey even a good poster won't always give the best advice. Also, I feel that being able to actually go through posts and try and indentify what is good/bad is very helpful to anyones learning process. After a while a new poster should be able to get a feel for who posts decent advice most of the time and who to take with a grain of salt. |
