I was at a home game where everyone knew everyone well and this one insane old guy was ranting hard until his circulatory system was showing. He said he was going to go into the bathroom and shoot himself. We all knew he packed. He went to the bathroom. He fired off his gun. Nobody at the table got up. A few minutes later he came out. Man was he mad now. SoBeDude, I’m glad you’re okay, outside and in. Your follow-up posts don’t sound vengeful and that’s a beautiful thing. It’s your life to love. Tommy

That pesky "law" stuff aside, do we really want to live in a world where everyone who runs any kind of business serving the public becomes responsible for the actions of all of its patrons? Another, related question, is what standard of conduct, exactly, are you suggesting casinos have to follow? Do you want them to bar a player for life everytime there's the slightest indication of disagreement or even simple frustration at losing, just in case it escalates into violence? Do you think that will lead to more hostility or less? If that's too extreme, where do you draw the line? You'd put casinos in an impossible position, which would lead to unreasonable rules to protect against unreasonable liabilities, and generally a worse poker experience for everybody. Sobe should the [censored] who popped him with a beer bottle, but not the casino.

Hi Hockey,
Speaking as a consumer, not a lawyer, here are my thoughts and expectations: 1) When you take a rake and hold a gaming license, my assumption is that the games are fair, safe and professionally run. Otherwise, I could hold my own games and invite the people I want, with a rake. 2)When a dealer allows a player to get away with pulling angles twice, he puts the player in the bad position of having to police the game. That's either poor training, poor supervision or lack of concern. Either way, I am not getting what I paid for. 3)When the casino's serve liquor, they are doing so with the intent of loosening people up enough to seperate them from their money and not for customer service. If they want to hold a liquor license, they should also be aware the potential risk associated. If I have to play around people who can't hold their liquor, I expect the casino to provide a safe environment. 4)After twice being called over to talk to the same player, who is unfortunately being policed by Scott, the casino management needs to recognize that a loosing player, who is shooting angles and drinking, while being policed by the same player, has a potential for a bad situation. I expect the floor to keep an eye on this. After the incident they distanced themselves to avoid any appearance of admission of resposibility. Their not offering Scott anything after the fact is a legal decision, nothing more.

I'm generally not the vengeful type, and I'm not the litigist type either (did I spell that right?).
But I've learned something from this experience, and I hope you all have too. Its easy to forget that what we love also attracts some of the wrong element, and we need to be more careful. If he had stood up and punched me, I'd have hit him back and that'd been the end of it. But since he choose to pick up an object and smash me in the head, clearly with the intent to do serious harm, I'm going after him hard. Followup on this guy: Apparantely he's a bad dude. One of the local regulars was at the table last night. Said he was connected with some scary people and may be involved with some bad things. And he told me a few stories...including the time some guys tried to rob him at an ATM at gunpoint. He said no u aren't getting my money and pulled out his gun and started firing. They caught it on the ATM camera. Cops caught up with him a few days later and asked why he didn't report the incidient, and he said he felt he had taken care of it and didn't think the cops would do anything anyway. -Scott
