Good news, but not good enough...great news would be if the winds dropped below 140mph or so, which probably won't happen... 165mph vs 175mph is a disaster either way...

[/ QUOTE ]

I agree but still the lower the better.

Looks like its veering to the left. Probably not going to be a direct hit. Isn't the wort part of a hurricane right next to the eye?

[/ QUOTE ]

worst flooding and whatnot is to the east of the eye

Never mind, i guess this one is rotating around the earth clockwise, so it looked like it was heading west but it's curving north then east

They just said as its path has moved slightly to the west, causing New Orleans to the be a DIRECT hit

But there is still plently of time, it is still very possibly for it to be missed.

I live in baton rouge, about an hour north west of New Orleans. The one the that many people don't realize is while the winds are dangerous, but the main problem for New Orleans is the up to 30ft storm surge. If this kind of storm surge hits New Orleans it will devestate the city which is below sea level. My best wishes to everyone else in this storms path.

Winds are down to 165 which is good news.

[/ QUOTE ]

Actually the hurricane maintained the same strength or even strengthened slightly. The pressure dropped even lower.

The reason they lowered the wind speed is because they were using a flight level to ground wind speed ratio that was too high. Most hurricanes have roughly this ratio (I don't know what the ratio is) but Katrina had a smaller ratio. They simply adjusted for a lower wind ratio.
