The 24 hr cafe is terrible. I heard so many bad things about the Luxor buffet, that we didn't even bother to eat there.

It's an OK hotel, one I would stay in again if there were no other choices. But we're talking Vegas, there are plenty of choices.

The buffet in the lower level is decent. Also, they do have great service in the hotel. I got remarried in March and we stayed at the Lux. My mother who was up in years was constantly calling the staff for help and they were great.

However, this Thanksgiving my brother, son, daughter and her husband and I are hitting Ballys for an inexpensive stay.

And no high-speed internet, in case that matters to you (not that you'll be playing internet poker in Vegas).

They have it in the rooms but it cost $10.95 for 24 hours.

the Nile deli by the sportsbook has really good sandwiches. the brisket on pretzel bread is amazing. I thought the food was high at the Luxor.

That said, I think downtown is great. Pretty bad for mid limit or better poker, but otherwise outstanding. Just the notion that you can buy a plastic football full of the equivalent of 5 bottled beers for $6 is fine and dandy with me. That you can walk out on the open street consuming it while listening to bad cover bands play is icing on the cake!

Wait - there's cake? I am SO there.

My brother and I are mostly low limit. I cap at about 10/20 limit and he mainly plays 1-200 max buy NL.

Drinking out of the football and eating $1 chili dogs was one of the highlights of my recent trip Vegas. Although, I don't think my girlfriend would agree!

Plenty of NL 100 or 200 buy in....Binions, Plaza, Golden Nugget. However, limit doesn't tend to be higher than $4-8. When I have gone and Binions had a $10-20 LHE game going, it has always broke within and hour of my arrival.

Gems of downtown Las Vegas:

$3 craps with 5x odds at Golden Gate.

Golden gate deli.....$0.99 shrimp cocktails, $4.50 regular sandwich's, $6.25 specialty sandwichs.

Golden Nugget snack bar...right next to poker room, the non authentic Philly Cheesesteaks at midnight are the best post drinking food I have ever had.

Decent DD BJ at Lady Luck.

Cheapo shows at Plaza. Free with coupon. You must buy one $7 drink. You can buy another drink for $2. So show + 2 drinks = $9. And the drinks actually have some alcohol in them.

Low buy in, decent tournaments at the Plaza.

The occasional crack ho sans a tooth or three at the horseshoe bar at binions.

Deep fried twinkies at the cheapo casino next to Glitter Gulch.

If you can manage to just buy a drink, sit at the stage and tip $1 a dancer, Glitter Gulch will be the cheapest strip club you have been to. $7.50 a beer. Admission is free, but you must buy 2 drinks. Go in drunk, buy your two beers, nurse them for an hour or so while staring at cuties flashing their tits, and walk out having spent $25-30 or so.

Thumbs down for the luxor in regards to poker and location combined; it seems more of a family oriented hotel so close to the MGM and the Excal.

You are going to be much more happy staying at the Mirage, I'm not so sure it will cost you THAT much more.

I also agree with the poster recommending the imperial palace, you can stay there, the barbary coast, bally's or even Harrah's with a prime location to all nearby rooms.

hope that helps

I actually stay regularly at Luxor. The location and room rates are very hard to beat. The restaurants are quite good and reasonably priced. Navigating the hotel and casino are quite easy thanks to a resort map provided at check-in. The only negative is that Blue Man Group have moved from Luxor to the Venetian. To give an indication on room rates, I am staying for a Wednesday through Friday in three weeks. If I remember correctly, the gambler's rate that I got was $59 for the first two nights and $109 for Friday. If you have any other questions, send me a private message.

Best Regards,
