How about this: You come here to GT, and I'll set you up against one of the girls on the team under the same terms.

I'd say tennis and ice hockey are 1a and 1b.

Yeah, they're both way up there. Golf was another one that I'd considered. For some reason badminton/ping pong keep jumping into my head (if you call them sports)...because there are some ridiculous players out there.

Edit: If you firmly believe that the handicaps make it even, then what's the question? Only you can decide whether to gamble on something EV neutral or not.

boxing, wrestling, mixed martial arts are up there too.

The girl on the right is who I'd put him up against.

Agreed, but flukes happen there. Amateur boxers can get lucky, even though it's extremely unlikely. So which is a person least likely to win? Chess match against Kasparov, golf against Tiger Woods, Ping Pong against a US National team player (or China), or boxing against the Heavyweight champ? In that list, I'd pick chess. Otherwise, I'd say Ping Pong.

somewhat related story

I had a friend who was a starting shooting guard for a division II school, who met John Stockton at a camp. long story short he talking him into 1 on 1, Stockton stipulates it's first to 21, score by ones and twos, winner takes the ball, and spots him 19.

now this guy is pretty damn good, averaged 20 pts/g in college ball, and said after the first minute he knew for a fact he would never score two baskets.

Really really strange that this came up. Yesterday I was wondering what sport would you have the least chance of winning against a competent professional if you had never played before. Assume that regardless of the sport, you have the appropriate physique and are reasonably agile. Oddly enough, Tennis was the first sport that came to mind where you'd absolutely get your ass handed to you.

In the case you mentioned, I'd guess the only way you're even going to win a single point is when he hits it out or makes another type of error.

not that i necessarily think it's a sport, but golf would be right up near the top of my list.

Never played before!? Practically every sport. This question is way more interesting if you say you assume you have average skill at the sport.

Anyway, snooker.

This is a proposition I'd be much more willing to take. Tennis chicks come in just behind the volleyball team.

it really depends on what you mean by amateur, because I think very few amateurs will have any chance at all in any of those.

you're thinking about this more from the standpoint of how would #100 fare against #1, which is a separate question entirely. and even then I don't see chess being any harder than

if the #1 boxer faced the #100 boxer right now I think the vegas odds would be worse than 100-1. I think there are more than 100 chess players with a 1/100 shot of beating kasparov in any given match
