$2.69 for 87 octane. Premium is nearing $3.

Oil just hit $64 a barrel. I hear that this is going to be an expensive winter for our Northeastern friends using heating oil.

Matthew Simmons, A respected investment banker to the energy industry is actively suggesting that oil could soar above $100 within the next few months and may continue to rise indefinately after that. His new book is called Twilight In The Desert and contains what may be the first extensive studies of the world's oil supplies. He's given many interviews over the last few weeks and most of them are chilling.

His thesis is that the world's output has "peaked" and will begin an irreversable decline in the next handful of years.

BTW- this isn't some environmentalist hack and he's not suggesting we'll run out of oil, only that demand will outstrip supply in the near future. Simmons is an oil industry insider and recently advised the president on energy matters.

Some scientists believe that we've already used 1/2 of the world's supply of oil, and the scientists that don't believe this agree that we'll have used 1/2 within the next 10 years or so.

Keep in mind that the majority of the 1/2 we used was over the last 40 years or so, and was used primarily in North America and Europe. Now we have China and India using up massive amounts of oil as well.

Also keep in mind that the first 1/2 of the supply was a lot easier to obtain (and therefore cheaper) than the second 1/2 will be to obtain. The "easy" oil is getting close to being depleted. Most of the deposits that are left are much costlier to squeeze oil out of.

There is some definite nastiness ahead.

$2.65 in Sunnyvale this morning for 87.

Anyone dumb enough to purchase premium deserves higher prices.

So last week crude oil was going at $61 a barrel. Now it is $65 a barrel, maybe even $67.

Lets go back to 1999. I think the average price was running around $35 a barrel. A friend mentioned to me that once gas nationwide hits $3.00 a gallon, that they will never come close to climbing back down. I think we are on a new era where gasoline will never be cheap again. Its almost like OPEC figured out they will run out of crude oil in a few years and they are getting a head start.

Its times like these I am glad I have a 4 cyl car.
