No sarcasm, that guy strongly dislikes me.

[/ QUOTE ]

again, you continue to miss the point.

I don't know you. I DO see what you write in these threads. I do strongly disagree with your writings. I have to wonder how/where/why an 18 year old has had his head stuffed full of so much nonsense.

As an optimist, I hope that you may perhaps even learn something as other people post points of view on topics.......

As a cynic, I'm afraid you're too far over the edge.......

As a realist, you will probably continue to hold your views, and will in the long run be much worse off for them.......

Past urban renewal programs have proven to be disasters.

[/ QUOTE ]

Not all of them. However, Lehighguy, the recent eminent domain debate is one in which you and I agree. This case of government intervention is unlike the other hypothetical AIDS cure thread, where the main difference (to me) is that lives are at stake.

In the case of new eminent domain laws allowing private enterprises to take over land from unwilling private homeowners, I say to the government: stay the hell off my land and out of my business.

Since joining the Libertarian Party last year, I cannot count the number of times I have had to respectfully disagree with everyone in the room about something. Being a libertarian, as you said, puts everyone at odds with your beliefs.

I agree with Kurn about quoting Ben Franklin...that's always a fun statement to throw out there in the middle of a crowded room, especially when most anyone else starts talking about closing the borders, the merits of the Patriot Act, or any Constitutionally shaky idea coming from either party(the American ones, I'm talking about...can't even imagine the reaction in England).

Regarding the other discussion: personally, the implications of Kelo scare the hell out of me. I know of a pre-Kelo road widening run-of-the-mill eminent domain case in Houston where a school had to sue the city to get proper compensation for their land. And...I don't like eminent domain, anyway. If I buy something, who is the government to take it away from me if I have done nothing wrong?

My worry with Kelo is that sooner or later, in one of these cases, one of these homeowners is going to decide that he will fight to the death to keep his home. When that happens, you will then see a citizen who has broken no laws either a)killed by police, or b)killing police officers, then killed by police. Maybe this is an extreme way of looking at it, but I can tell you this: if I was a homeowner, I would feel exactly this way, and I guarantee that a decision to bulldoze my home to build a hotel would be the signal for me to lock and load.

I agree that if it gets abused it would be really bad for eveyone. I just dont think it will.

[/ QUOTE ]

I think you're an absolute fool if you support a law *can* be abused you just hope it won't.

At that point you are dependent on always hoping that only men of good will are ever in a position to implement those laws, which is a naive hope at best.

Supporting a law the *can* be abused only assures that you *will* be abused.

duuuh...where have you been..

here in a small town in south carolina; a man killed a police officer because eminent domain was used to take part of his front yard to widen a road..

by the way; this took place about 15 miles from lake seccession s.c.; the last meeting of the south's war council ; which ended the war against northern aggression.

some people ain't gonna give up their land without a fight..

Forgive me that I'm not as well-versed in my small-town South Carolina news as I should be... ...but thank you for proving my point.

I'm sure killing that police officer will him help get his land back. I'm not sure what the point is, people kill people for all kinds of dumb reasons.

Well any rational thinker clearly wouldn't react this way, it's actually kind of scary that someone would think this way. Also if you read my other posts they have the ability to dig your house out of the ground and move it on these huge trailers so bulldozing your house isn't always the first option.

I'm in favor because it benefits the community.

So basically, you're a socialist? Quit pretending to be Mr. Young Republican and just admit it. First the fascist "what do you have to hide" crap and now the "government can take whatever they want" line. You're just an authoritarian statist pretending to be a free-marketeer.

What a loser.
