This is the correct answer, but not the right price. I just bought a rack, power bar, and 600 lbs. of plates for < $500.

[/ QUOTE ]

Where did you buy from?

never mind the limitations it has in building muscles, it will destroy your body after extended use.

I've been using one for 4 years, exactly how has it destroyed my body?

I'm thinking that a lot of the posters talking about using a Smith machine because of safety issues might not know what a power rack is.

By setting the pins in the right spot it's pretty hard to hurt yourself by failing on a rep.

Smith machines are horrible. Having the weight stabilized is counter-productive, as it limits the number of muscle fibers used and will make stabilizing muscles comparitively weaker over time.

I love these racks, but they're still plenty dangerous without a spotter and you can definitely hurt yourself. Squats are inherently a very, very dangerous exercise, and there's no getting around that. A rack helps make them less dangerous, but your body can get severely wrenched whether you have a rack or not.

Totally. And anyone whose lifting regularly over any decent period of time is going to, sooner or later, get an injury, without a partner to protect them.

If you're training with near-maximal weight and fail at the deepest portion of the squat, how would a spotter be able to help you? Note: I agree with the rest of your post.

Well, neither a rack nor a spotter is a guarantee against injury. Hopefully they help out if things go wrong, but the risk can't be eliminated.

Especially if your spotter is looking the other way or doesn't pay much attention. That's scary.
