You seriously underestimate the amount of skill involved in stratego.

So I'm told! Perhaps that's why I rarely won back then.

Are you sure about those oranges beating my beloved greens? Don't have board in front of me, but I would think the greens would be likely to getting landed on given your in the orange zone - i.e. 13-15 spaces away = 2*(most likely dice rolls). Plus, you're getting paid off more obviously.

You would expect greater densities 7 spaces beyond hot spots (jail is the biggest one)... but, as you increase the multiple of 7 that you use, the "7 after" effect decreases, and the densites on each square begins to blur. So, even though green is 14ish spots after jail, the effect is less than that on the orange.

Also... when people say orange is best, they are saying: orange has the best return of investment, not that you plan to make the most with orange.

I think a semi-joke (I think it was a joke) you made in a previous post has some relavance here...

Something like: you can win at LHE without even knowing why. Because you can make the right move without even knowing why.

Just think about how different LHE is compared to chess:

- In LHE, me (playing at real stakes < 1 year) can make a lot of correct choices. Im not really sure of an exact percentage, but the percentage of LHE decisions that are obvious is very large. On top of that, you only ever have 3 buttons to hit. There is a 33% chance you will hit the button the best player in the world would have hit.

- In chess (which I have played longer than LHE) I can very rarely get a move correct (as per advice from chessmaster). Opening moves aside, chess presents many many different options.

- The mistake of hitting the wrong button in LHE is not too often that large. A call when you should have raised very rarely guarentees a losing session.

- In chess, one wrong move, and against a non-trivial % of opponents, I am cooked. Two wrongs moves, and the outlook is even worse.

Think about that: In chess, there are more ways to get it wrong, and getting it wrong tends to have a more negative impact.

FWIW, the book "1000 ways to win Monopoly games," is perhaps the book your friend mentioned, and was actually written by the current president of Cornell.

It was a joke the way I worded it!

What I meant by saying that is a person can make the right choice in a particular situation (fold, bet) but not understand the correct purpose for the move.

I think it's difficult to draw too many comparisons to chess and LHE......apples and oranges.

I threw it out there because of extreme difficulty of overcoming an opponent with a much greater skill level.
