Well, I hate to say it but I have been tipping .50 live at Foxwoods, buying a roll of half dollars (or getting a bunch playing 5-10 stud). I'd never ask a dealer to chop though. I think I'll continue to tip .50 there, as the dealers pool tips. At Mohegan, I used to do the .50 tip to the bad/okay dealers and do $1 or $2 to the good ones (depending on pot size.) In NYC club, where dealers are paid only tips I always tip $1.

Just don't tip at all if you need to tip $.50. I am sure that most dealers would prefer getting stiffed from 1 player then letting the other 9 know that $.50 is even an option.

Another thought would be to only tip every other pot. The dealer still gets the same amount of money but the other players don't see the $.50 tip and get bad ideas of their own.

Why don't you just say "I'm a cheapskate," rather than use that tired excuse about pooled tips.

Why do people tip at all if the dealers pool tips?

Because most people realize that a card room isn't going to keep even semi-competent dealers if every dealer was stiffed by every player...Duh...

Ouch. Okay, I'll up it to $1 at Fox, too.

But chess, it's not tired to say that pooled tips make a difference. At Mohegan, where dealers kept tips, there were some great dealers who got lots of hands out, were pleasant, nice to fish, etc. I definitely liked being able to tip them more generously. And tip the bad ones less well. It's rare I'd stiff someone, but if tips weren't pooled, I'd tip .50 to many of the slow, rude, bad dealers at Foxwoods. At the NYC club, there are some great dealers and a couple who are awful. And I do tip the good ones more.

Sounds like a savvy regular. Depending on pot size, 50 cents is very fair.

Of course if the pot is $300+ and he still gives 50 cents...

But one thing is clear, as a dealer, any tip is a good tip.

If you acknowledge that $1 is an average tip to give to an average dealer, then you must realize that by tipping every dealer $.50 you are stiffing every dealer by 50%, all because you don't have the ability to completely stiff the occasional terrible dealer.

I see what you're saying, but I don't see why you have to be the tipping police on these boards. I don't stiff dealers, but I am not going to tip excessively. I play poker at casinos to make money, not dealer friends. I don't tip if I steal the blinds, if I win a pot on the flop, or if there is very light betting. I also sometimes don't tip if horribly stuck. If I tip (and I will for most any decent pot), it's always $1. But I respect anyone's right to tip what they want to. People play poker for different reasons and recreational players usually tip more than enough to compensate for frugal pros, stiffs, etc. Dealers generally make a pretty good living for what they do (at least in AC where I play).

Also, as for Foxwoods...I tip very lightly due to the pooling. The reason the dealers at Fox suck is the same reason communism fails: there is no incentive to get better. I'm against it and, while I won't totally stiff b/c I feel for good dealers there, I'm not going to be very generous either.
