the key is consistency

I couldn't disagree more. If you give every dealer a buck all the time no matter what then a) they will come to expect it no matter how they do and think everyone who doesn't is an [censored] (of course this has already happened) and b) the tokes they get won't affect their performance since they get them anyway.

Tip the good dealers a buck. Tip the bad dealers nothing. Know the difference. Tip the top 1% of dealers 2 bucks, or a buck at the end of their down if you didn't win a pot or something. Base your tipping policy on courtesy and effeciency.

Just how much do you disagree with it?

Did you miss the first word of my post? It says, Generally .

I think you agree with it alot more than you think you do. Dealers know the consistent tippers. They are their bread and butter of their income. Don't think this doesn't go unnoticed.

How about the in between dealers? Obviously if a dealer is bad, you don't tip them.

You do realize, tipping also has the effect of keeping the rake down? If dealers were not allowed to accept tips, how high do you think the rake would increase?

I disagreed with the part I quoted.

I would have no problem with an extra $1/hand rake in a tips prohibited room. I also define good pretty losoely. If I don't notice a problem with the dealer, if they just blend into the game, that's plenty for me. They don't have to do anything spetacular.

The thing I hate abotu tipping is that it's expected and mandatory if you don't want to come across as a total douche. I do it because I suspect it's -EV not to, but that still doesn't change that opinion.

I was giving the forum the benefit of the doubt that I didn't need to cover bad dealers.

What if it's $2+ a hand?

That sucks about Foxwoods...not getting to keep their own tokes on poker. That is the whole reason I switched from dealing BJ/Craps/Roulette etc.. to dealing poker: because I know that with a great attitude, and a desire to run a good game, I will make more money. I won't tip a bad dealer, either...and this is coming from the mouth of a dealer!! A good poker dealer deserves about $1 a pot as long as they maintain the flow and integrity of the game. I once got larger tips from a table for putting a kabosh on a few Mexican players that weren't speaking English during the hand... I feel like a prick for doing it, but hey, it's my job and it's the least I can do in return for the $1 or so a pot that I'm given when I deal.

why would it need to be? Dealers don't get tipped every hand, usually if they do it's a buck. An extra buck in rake would yield marginally less than a buck/hand for each dealer, roughly the same as tokes

I would draw the line at $1/hand.

I tip around that much, so anything higher is costing me more money than just tipping.
