Re: Best Classical music piece of all time
It's all in the ear of the beholder, of course. My favorite composer is Chopin. He was the master of every musical element--harmony, melody, texture, counterpoint, rhythm, form--except for orchestration. But of course he made the piano into an orchestra in and of itself. If you want to sample his genius, listen to the Barcarolle, the "Winter Wind" etude, and the Piano Sonata in B minor.
Based on the space in the Schwann catalog, the most popular 18th and 19th century composers are, in order: Mozart Beethoven Bach Brahms Tchaikowsky Schubert Chopin Haydn Wagner Schumann Verdi |

Rimsky-Korsakov: Sheherazade [/ QUOTE ] I love that one! By the way, I'm surprised no joker mentioned "The Lone Ranger Overture." |

Re: Best Classical music piece of all time
Correct me if I'm wrong, but Ode to Joy is a hymn.
The 9th is the "Choral" And I agree with your choice, BTW. Mozart's Requiem is probably my favorite composition, but I can't call it the best when it was written by more than one composer. |
