Re: Picking a new last name
[ QUOTE ]
Someone I know has a really, well, ridiculous last name (in English anyway). [/ QUOTE ] I thought about changing my last name for a very, very long time (never did). I would have done so to "disown" my father. I would have used my middle name as my last name - It's my grandfather's first name and it's one of those names that are used as both first and last names. So it would have maintained the connection with my family and heritage, just painting my father out of the picture. I would strongly suggest your friend choose a last name that's going to have some meaning to him, like, say the name of a personal hero or source of inspiration. He's going to be living with that name a long time (unless he decides to change it again) so it might as well be something he likes. In addition, when the inevitable conversation arises about changing his last name, he'll have some little anectdote to tell. This could be usefull, particularly in politics. ie, "I changed my last name to XXXX because I really admire XXXX and in particular...." is a lot better than "Yeh, I had a silly sounding last name so I picked one that sounded good". Oh, and pick something that's not going to get old or dated. Like all those parents who named their kids "Farrah" or more recently, "Britney" |

I knew a dealer once named Joe Snow. California. Always liked the sound of those California dudes in Spirit. |

Re: Picking a new last name
[ QUOTE ]
I recommend using a first name for his new last name. Something like... Nathan. He could be Matthew Nathan. Or, Nathan, Matthew for all you form filers. Maybe John. Or Thomas. I like Matthew Thomas. [/ QUOTE ] My supervisor at Best Buy a year and a half ago had three first names for his full name, all of which were 4 letters or less. |
