Re: Best Video Game 1988-1994 Round 3

Why are the votes so split between Chrono Trigger and X-Com: UFO Defense? Chrono Trigger is the best RPG on SNES and is easily a top ten RPG of all time, if not the best of all time. [/ QUOTE ] I'm guessing there aren't many people who have played both |

[ QUOTE ] and smb2 was far better in my opinion, more out there, with different style characters. [/ QUOTE ] One vote for *. [/ QUOTE ] haha, thats hilarious. I make completely true statements, one about my opinion, one that the game was "out there" which is true, and the other that all the characters were different.... which is true. yep, you'd better just ban me and save the time. so is anyone going to actually tell me why smb3 was so [censored] groundbreaking???? |

[/ QUOTE ] X-Com is arguably the best game of all time. Great plot, interesting base design/resource management, excellent turn based combat, good graphics for the time, and the whole game just had a great feel to it. Read Blarg's post on the game in the other thread, he says it much better than me. X-Com is a better resource management type game than Chrono Trigger was an RPG. |

Im down, I need a game project, not to mention I've never played this, and it would be fun. |

Re: Best Video Game 1988-1994 Round 3
I don't know how you would do multi-player, but that game or any game with a (very) similar combat system would be great.
It would be challenging to try to make something like that work, since a solid amount of your time is spent in resource management too. Perhaps you could have the resource management parts timed, like chess clocks time players or something. You know, now that I remember, they did do a very brief online version, one of those kind that would be playable for just a short time, not a full on battle. Supposedly it missed the mark. It wasn't one of their regular series iterations. Heck, it might even have been e-mail, I can't remember. But damn, those aliens were cool and scary and the combat was good. I actually got all excited when I heard they had come out with a new X-Com a couple months ago, but like virtually every sequel, it got really bad reviews. (Only the second got decent reviews.) I kinda knew that would happen, as they've tried all kinds of variations on it in sequels. The problem is, they were all kinds of variations! The original model was basically flawless, and the variations all dragged it down. If they came out with a new updated X-Com that was pretty much just like the original, I'd happily get it. |

Frankly I'm suprised Street Fighter 2 doesn't have a bigger lead. It was and is THE game of it's genre. [/ QUOTE ] It's up against A Link to the Past! *twitch twitch* |

splashpot, i totally agree. While SMB3 is an excellent game, FFVI is the the best RPG ever made (I'll accept arguments for FFVII). The best gameplay, amazing story, amazing side quests. It just didn't get any better than this game. How dare it lose so badly to a decent side scroller.

In the end, nostalgia over a mainstream game beats nostalgia over a classic rpg, it makes sense. |
