I saw the interview with him, and he basically said "I guess I'm known as the unibomber" I don't think he picked it and either way relax, its just a nickname.

I think that the Unabomber thing was only half the problem
in this tournament. Make believe you had never seen a WPT event, but had read about the surging interest in poker etc., and decided to tune in. Your reaction might have been that this is like wrestling, where the most popular player
wins, pulls an ace on the river etc. I'm glad that the era of 50+ guys chomping on cigars and quietly staring at each other is over, but Laak's antics are too much and could hurt the WPT in the long run.

They should start calling the WPF if they keep this crap up, which I am sure they will. I don't know if it will hurt the series, but it sure will hurt poker in general, or heck, maybe it will drive more pro's onto the net so they dont have to deal with idiots like this at the casino. Of course, more pro' on the 'net would not be a good thing for me.

The nickname was given to him by the other players. This comes from his hooded sweatshirt, sunglasses, and the fact that he's a smart guy, like the unibomber was. He's also pretty eccentric, a la Montana's favorite son.

that guy was a bastard the way he would knock over all his chips into a a big pile every time he was all in so that the dealer would have to stack them all back up to count them.

I agree 100%; it's in very bad taste. I mean, how the hell can anyone think it's appropriate to use that as a nickname? The guy is a murderer, for God's sake.

I cringed every time I heard them say it.

I'm also tired of hearing people complain about "political correctness." I'm a fan of being straightforward, but this is not a situation where some kind of important point or opinion is being obscured by political correctness. This is just a nickname. Sometimes you really need to consider other people's feelings. Deriding something as PC has now become a way to justify insensitivity.

Hurt poker? This can only be good for the game, when people sit down and watch a guy who's *gasp* having fun at the table! Notice, also, that nobody asked him to stop, as my guess is that he probably would have had this happened...it was a freeroll, people were there for a good time too, you know. If you don't like it, don't watch it - but that's part of poker's attractiveness is that people can do things like that and BE THEMSELVES, and not just another mindless face to "fit in" to what "people" want.

And as far as this whole "Unabomber" nickname fiasco goes, yeah, I see MAYBE a few people being upset, but they weren't making reference to anything but the guy's sweatshirt. I feel for anybody who knows the people the REAL Unabomber killed and hurt, but sometimes you just need to let things like a nickname go?

Where are all the people crying foul over Chris Ferguson being nicknamed Jesus just for his long hair and beard? Oh wait, Chris is a little quieter and the guy he's nicknamed for was the Son of God, but still, just an example of a nickname based on vague appearance.
