Re: How smart are you?
[ QUOTE ]
[ QUOTE ] when i was young, like 7, I had an IQ of 160 or something. its been all down hill from there intelligence-wise. I would like to think i'm at like 130-140ish right now but i don't know or care if I am. i did get 2160 (equiv 1440 or so?) on the new sat and 31 on the act while refusing to study for either. [/ QUOTE ] I'd just like to point out that your IQ isn't supposed to change over your lifetime unless you've managed to loose many brain cells via drug use, drinking etc. IQ is supposed to be intrinsic. [/ QUOTE ] not entirely. it's your mental age/real age. if your mind develops early you'll have a higher IQ when you're younger. for the most part you're right though. besides, IQ tests study one specific aspect of intelligence and there are many flaws to them. being a student of cognitive science, I've been told to hate them. |

[/ QUOTE ] i have lost some braincells, but not that many. basically I was just a lot smarter back then compared to poeple my age than I am now. There's still a big gap, just not a huge one. I used to be able to spell [censored] backwards better than most people could spell forwards. Now that's intelligence |

Re: How smart are you?
I'd be more interested in knowing a commonly successful score for something like EQ.
I suspect that raw intelligence makes it possible for you to be a long-term winner, but something like EQ actually controls whether you are a long-term winner. |

Re: How smart are you?
I'm easily a long term winner and I did VERY poorly on these EQ tests.
Just because other peoples' emotions don't concern me as much as I should (for example), it doesn't make me a worse poker player. I'd say it makes me better. I have a temper in life but I can control myself quite well when most people would tilt. Poker is much different than other aspects of life. Ryan |

Re: How smart are you?
there was interesting article in cardplayer on this exact subject. they didnt go into detail about IQ or EQ test scores, but they came to the conclussion that intelligence does normally correlate with poker skill. i think that raw intelligence can only take u so far in poker.
1320/31, but i think i lack a lot of critical thinking skills that i think make people great poker players. |

Re: How smart are you?
ACT~31 composite
36 reading 36 english 26 and 27 in math and science dont remember which was which It was the first and only time I took the test so if I couldnt do the math or science in my head or with simple calculations I just guessed thinking I would take the test again. Only IQ test I ever took was given to me in elementary school and I scored a 157. So supposedly I am fairly intelligent but i still suck at the poker. |

This post is ridiculous
Here's why:
I think it's absurd to think that a really smart guy will beat small stakes poker by a much larger margin than a dumbass. The people with higher IQ's have a better chance at beating the high stakes games b/c there's a ton more complex concepts involved. Small stakes poker (ie up till NL 200) is very simple. You can do well if you understand simple math like pot odds, implied odds, and the concepts behind value betting. A person with a 33 on the ACT is not going understand these concepts any better than someone with a 23; they're extremely simple. Once you understand the basic concepts, it comes down to your instincts and your ability to read players. Sure, higher intelligence might help you figure out a person's betting patterns, but people of lower intelligence are still perceptive. And even if you got a 36 on the ACT and are great at reading people, this many times rarely matters in games up till NL200 b/c there are so many morons. Overall pt: The correlation b/w intelligence and rate you win at is only relevant/important in higher stakes. |

Re: This post is ridiculous
I have a friend, the one who taught me how to play this game and is a consistent 6-8 bb/100 at 1kNL, who is not the smartest kid ever. He probably got under a 900 on his SAT, smokes weed all day but understands poker to a degree which I cannot understand. 1280 on SAT for me.
