I answered that A8o is better for the conditions stated by the book: very aggressive opponent who bluffs and semi bluffs too much.

QJo is better against typical opponents--Aces are bluff outs and you get more action from second best hands when you improve.

Doesn't QJ play better post flop?

I would say no. A8 has showdown value. With QJ, if you don't catch you, are caught in the unpleasant spot of having to either bluff the whole way or give up and risk either losing a showdown to a weak ace or king or opening the door to being bluffed out by a worse hand. Heads up in a blind steal situation, I think that A8 "plays better" due to giving you the option of heading to a showdown without being reliant on help from the board.

A8 completely whiffs the flop way more often.

Default This is the authors argument for QJo

My feeling was that A8o is better because it will win showdown unimproved more often. Only time I would prefer QJo is against a preflopraise from a not very loose player, then I guess QJo is dominated less.

Anyway, Jacobs made me think about this again.

Jacobs says QJo is better then A8o, stealing from button because:

1) If u have a made pair u are in great shape.

2) If one overcard hit its easier to get away.

3) U will more often flop 2 overcards and have 6 outs for toppair instead of 3.

4) U will get paid more, u will get more action on a Q72 flop then a A72 flop.

5) QJo is - mostly because of (2) and (3) - easier to play.

Yes, I didnt state this in my post, but Jacobs says that the guy in Big Blind is aggressive bluffer without being maniac.

You mean A8o works better because u have to see showdown now and then u prefer Ahigh?

With QJ, you win usually if an ace flops anyways.

[/ QUOTE ]

Very true. And you make more if a Q or J flops then when an Ace flops, that and you usually dont have to worry about being reverse dominated.

This is dumb. Shouldn't we all love 23 then?
His other reasons are good. You also get to win more pots without showing down QJo because you more often have enough outs to be able to semibluff.

I think it's all about what kind of limit game you were in.Loose? or Tight? In the "tight" game I believe most of player would choose A8, and in the loose game I would choose QJ as well .We all know that Qj has more odd to make a hand. But A8 is only play that hight card "A" who would think I I am going to beat this hand with my confident "8"
.Its all about I am going to call all you down by there are a crap board I am going to call you with my A high. That's happend in the short handed game all the time. so I think it's depends the "game"
