yeah, that is the problem, it is outrageous for the lower limit games, but it makes sense for higher limit games. only problem is they dont use that rake for higher games, they use a time charge. so basically bay 101 overcharges differently based on the game, good times...

Bay101 just changed it's 20/40 (again!), now it's the $4 rake. $3 dead button drop a year ago, then $7/half hour time charge, now the rake. Oh, well - when you win an average of 1 pot every 2 hours as I do, this is the least expensive alternative.

I spent most of my ten bay area years in oakland san francisco and berkeley so I can't speak about san jose with authority. but the couple times I was down there I saw a lot of strip malls with fat barefoot partially dressed people in dirty pick up trucks. looked just like arkansas or any other republican capital to me.

This is all very old news. The cardrooms aren't going anywhere for the time being because San Jose is broke, and this is a huge tax generator for them. I think they get something like 35% of the GROSS revenue there - drop, restaurant sales, and booze, so the margins aren't as good as it sounds. Gonzales hates the cardrooms, but he has no choice. As far as his accusations go about all of the bad stuff, he's probably right, but most of it happens on the Asian side. I suspect that the lawyers will continue to bat this thing around time and time again, and all of this talk is just political banter. Don't worry about it.

there's a big, big difference between San Jose and, say, a Berkeley or Santa Cruz or even San Francisco.

[/ QUOTE ]

Amen. San Jose might be liberal by Texas standards, but it's conservative compared to the rest of the Bay area. Hell, at times it's nearly as bad as Orange County.

There was a huge outcry in San Jose and the surrounding communities when Newsom started giving out marriage licenses to gays. Lots of letters to the editor complaining about how "San Jose shouldn't follow in their footsteps," etc.

Anyone who thinks that Saratoga or Willow Glen are as liberal as Berkeley has either never lived here or just wants to lay claim to the "poor, oppressed wingnut" title before anyone else co-opts it.

(But if any of you wingnuts like Michael Savage, we'll pay you good money to take him off our hands and off our radio.)

You're right, in that $4/pot is better for you and I (somewhat tighties), especially when it's 8-9/handed.

What frustrates me is that the rake (which is effectively 100% up to $4, or $3 short) is still $3 with 2 to 6 players. Whereas before, 4 handed was $4/half hour (?), or $32 for the table, now it's SUBSTANTIALLY more.

I asked Al (the one floorman who will shoot straight and *really* understands card room ops) what Bay 101's motive for their recent changes was (20/40 going to rake, and 20/40 going to 9 handed while 40/80 stayed 10 handed), and I suggested it was greed/revenue considerations. He didn't disagree.

Dan

P.S. I'm sure I've played with you; now I just need to figure out who you are!

P.P.S. I've heard that Garden City is now $4/rake, but $3/button at the 20/40. Is this true?

Sucker, I agree with 99.9% of the things you say, but there's no way this is true. If they're taking 35% of bay 101's net, that's high, but believable. There's not a restaurant in the world that can give up 35% of its gross and make money. I do understand that in a casino, a restaurant is likely a loss leader, or at best break even, but still...

No way.

No, GC has the same scheme as Bay101 at 20/40: $4 when 7-9 handed, $3 for 6 handed and $1 for 5 handed or less, or when there's no flop.

Ahha!!! So $1 when 5 or less is feasible. What bullshit on Bay 101's part.

Do you play much at either/both nowadays?
