It's done for two reasons:

1. It's simple human psychology that people think that other people care what they think. In the real world, yes, people care about whether GW is going to go to war with Iran. But on the internet? Who gives an F whether OOT poster 2 agrees with OOT poster 1 that Jessica Alba is a fine piece of A.

2. To inflate post counts.
