The first WPPA show on GSN had Kevin Nealon hosting with Evelyn Ng.

He was soooooo bad - he didn't know that if there's a straight on the board, but one player had a higher straight with a card in his hand, he wins.. he goes 'don't they just play the board?'

Also he had no idea how many outs people had....

Evelyn Ng. She sounds like her commentary is written out for her in advance, and she rattles it off in a fast monotone that makes it very difficult to understand.

I concur.

Actually there hasn't been a real good one yet on TV. I mean
a "John Madden" type who will strongly criticize bad play and
strongly praise good imaginative play.

[/ QUOTE ]

I disagree: Phil Gordon is what you describe, and the best poker announcer on TV.

Worst: The Chad.

Howard Lederer is much better than Phil Gordon.

Again I feel that there are no really good poker analysts. Even Lederer and Gordon, who are tolerable, never say the following:
"so-and-so made a bad play but they got lucky on the river". I sometimes think they are told by FSN/WPT/ESPN to put the players in these tournaments on a pedestal, i.e. to create "heroes".

Jesse May is horrible. They had him doing that midnight poker for a while which was a perfect cure for insomnia. Konik and Chad are tollerable. Howard is probably the best. Chris Rose is fine, does just enough not to annoy you, although calling Huck Seed, Huckleberry for the entire broadcast was kind of dopey. I know it's his name but come on, everybody calls him Huck...

[/ QUOTE ]

Howard is very good, but I think the best commentary, IMO, is that of Fossilman commenting on the final table where he won.

I don't think it's fair to say that Howard Lederer is much better than Phil Gordon. Howard seems to give much more insightful analysis, yes, but that's primarily because of the stuff he's covering. Put Howard on Celebrity Poker and what is he gonna say about people that call off all their chips with jack high on the flop because they 'thought he was bluffing'?

Also, Phil Gordon speaks with some enthusiasm, and character, while Howard... you gotta be REAL Interested in what Howard is saying to enjoy his commentary. Yes, in our cases, we are.
