I think he's a bit overrated myself. Sure, in his prime, he was great. His strikeout rate was excellent. But even then, his walk rate was poor. He is among the all time leaders in career hit batsmen per batters faced.

I think alot of his perceived value comes from his reputation as being a "clutch" pitcher. This is based on his performance down the stretch in the Indians' pennant runs in 1988.5 and 1989.5. However, numerous studies have concluded that "clutch" hitters are either non-existant or very rare. Although no studies on "clutch" pitchers have been done to my knowledge, I see no reason to believe that it is any different for pitchers. Regardless, his "clutch" numbers were actually no better than his typical numbers - opponents actually hit for a slightly higher OPS with runners on base than they did with the bases empty.

You're poll is gay. And right now my choice of all the current pitchers in baseball would be Jason Schmidt. If you are only talking about relievers, then I choose Brad Lidge.
