For above all, you must remember that poker is not primarily a game of luck. It is a game of Skill.

Sure poker is gambling. You're betting that you won't be so unlucky as to lose money over the short-term that is your life.

Seriously, though, there is no settling this debate. It's just a question of how you want to see yourself. One player wants to see himself as a prudent, grounded professional - so he says: "Look, skill always takes the money in the end, so poker isn't gambling at all." But another player, maybe he doesn't want to see himself as just another professional. He might think that's boring, mundane. One of the reasons he fell in love with poker in the first place might have been that it offered the successful player a level of independence that no "real" profession could provide. He likes to see himself as a self-reliant, courageous, idiosyncratic risk-taker. So he says, "Some nights, you can play like a God and still lose all your money to a bunch of clueless tourists - poker is full of risk, so of course it's gambling!"
Put these two in the same room, and they'll argue until dawn. And neither of them will EVER be able to convince the other unless he can somehow effect a total personality change in him.

When I use the term Gamble I mean:

[ QUOTE ]
"To engage in any activity in which money is put at risk for the purpose of making a profit, and which is characterized by some or most of the following (in approximately descending order of importance): little or no research has been conducted; the odds are unfavorable; the behavior is risk-seeking; an unsystematic approach is being taken; emotions such as greed and fear play a role; the activity is a discrete event or series of discrete events not done as part of a long-term plan; the activity is significantly motivated by entertainment or compulsion; ownership of something tangible is not involved; no net economic effect results."

[/ QUOTE ]

If any of you believe that poker is a gambling game, given this definition, and treat it as such, please play at my table.

Vince

[/ QUOTE ]

That's a stupid, slanted definition. How about:

Main Entry: 1gam·ble
Pronunciation: 'gam-b&l
Function: verb
Inflected Form(s): gam·bled; gam·bling /-b(&-)li[ng]/
Etymology: probably back-formation from gambler, probably alteration of obsolete gamner, from obsolete gamen (to play)
intransitive senses
1 a : to play a game for money or property b : to bet on an uncertain outcome
2 : to stake something on a contingency : take a chance

Yes, poker is gambling.

I'll buy this one. Professional Poker players are certain of one thing and that is that the outcome of their betting will reslt in a profit. Consequently they are not gambling, just working.

If I told you to pick a number 1 through 6 then roll a die and if your number hit I would pay you 10 to 1, this would still be gambling. The fact that you would be virtually guaranteed a profit over the long run doesn't change that it's gambling.

Poker is gambling because no matter how much you are beating the game by, it is still possible to lose all your money no matter how large your bankroll is. If you follow proper bankroll guidelines this chance will be almost 0, but never exactly 0.

I really do need to fly out to sit at your table.
