Back to basics Joe. Free cards are bad.

Re: Stangest overpair I\'ve ever played.
"I'd love one of the cold-callers to raise me and clear out the field."
Above all, that's the reason to bet, IMO. It's not so much that I'd love for one of cold-callers to raise. It's that I'm obligated, as a cooperator, to give them a chance to raise. What the toughest players I know do is, on the flop, the legit contenders team up. They bet and raise to make dead money. Then the turn and river happens. It's like two phases. I think you have to bet this flop for the team. Tommy |

Re: Stangest overpair I\'ve ever played.
Everything depends on whether someone after you presents any decent likelihood of raising.
If the chances are as slim as you say -- which certainly seems a rare scenario -- then I think this is a terrific play. It makes people tentative just a bit as well, since you could be slowplaying a set. Count me among the approvers. JimmyV |

Re: Stangest overpair I\'ve ever played.
Nice to see a post from you Joe. I see where you said you didn't expect many callers. I can see how that would effect your plan on playing the hand. But, short of a set or rainbow, could you have asked for a better flop to bet into?
Tommy - "What the toughest players I know do is, on the flop, the legit contenders team up. They bet and raise to make dead money. Then the turn and river happens. It's like two phases. Results and thoughts.
The jury is still out with me on this hand. I just don't feel like I have enough value in a flop bet knowing I'm taking 4 to the turn at least.
Well, I checked, got my wish and it was checked through. Turn: 7 [img]/images/graemlins/diamond.gif[/img] [8 [img]/images/graemlins/heart.gif[/img]3 [img]/images/graemlins/heart.gif[/img]2 [img]/images/graemlins/spade.gif[/img]], near perfect. The BB check, one EP called and I raised, the BB then folded, EP called. Heads up to the river: 2 [img]/images/graemlins/club.gif[/img] Check, bet, fold and I drag. Thanks for your comments and replies. Hope all had a safe New year. -Joe Tall |

[ QUOTE ]
That's exactly what was going through my head. I just wanted a free turn, play-on, situation. Like if 4cards flopped. [/ QUOTE ] Than you must not raise PF |

Re: Stangest overpair I\'ve ever played.
Interesting post Joe. I would bet this flop *without thinking* 100% of the time but that doesn't mean it's right.
I guess my question for you is, aside from when you flop a set, are there any flops that you would bet given the preflop action? Luke |

Oh yeah. 222, 333, 444, etc. Monotone, Axx - folding to a raise. Sure, a bunch. |
