there's a bet and 3 calls, and the most popular card in the game makes a straight with which most players won't raise, and a guy who bet and got FIVE calls on the turn bets again on the river. calling there sucks

Woot.

Our friend needs to raise the flop, but it seems he knows that now. Why am I following you around, um, I dunno.

Peacers,

Raising the turn is borderline suicide.

Hate to buck the trend here, but even at Party, the likelihood that the bettor and 4 callers all have less than a straight is below the 1:17 he needs to make this river call worthwhile. Yes, it is a huge pot, and I will almost always advocate calling with a set here (and would for just the bettor and one caller), but someone's got the straight. I raise the flop, but play the same on all other streets.

With 4 callers (possibly 5), how is raising the turn anything close to a bad thing?

If you assume all will call, it's not. If 3 will fold, and guy with straight 3bets...it is.

i know where you are coming from, michael.

assume this, though. you KNOW that each opponent in this hand has the 67 for the nuts(i know this is not possible). you KNOW noone will fold, and that they will put in the 4 bets to maximize the pot. in other words, a 6 way cap.

still suicide?

cheers!

No it's not. Don't 'assume' this until it happens. Otherwise, what other +EV bets are you missing?

This is a gimme raise.

That's a dream scenario. Along with hitting the river afterwards.
