Your basic rule of economics only holds if you hold all other variables constant. Sure eventually if you raise it high enough you can lower the amount of online qualifiers. But even a lot of "top" pros cannot play in THAT high of a buyin event without risking too much of their bankroll. The WPT final event is a 25,000 buyin and had a plethora of online qualifiers.

So, I take it no one knows if the online casinos pay full price to send their qualifiers or if the WSOP / WPT gives each higher profile online casino a certain number of free or discounted entries in exchange for the promotion?

The online sites already make tons of money off of the tournament fees on the satellites and the satellites to play in the satellites so I don't think it makes that much of a difference.

Another dillusional post by Cris. The difference in skill between Joe Poker and Phil Ivey is a LOT less than the difference between Tiger Woods and Joe 9-iron. A slightly above average could never beat Tiger in a match. Maybe one in 100,000. But an amateur could beat Ivey in a poker match at least 10% of the time. Possibly more. The amount of luck in a poker tournament as huge. I will make the following prediction. No one will ever reach the final table in a 2000+ player event two years in a row. Is this an even money bet, or even worse? Who knows. What are your thoughts.

Well since you say ever, the EV of your bet depends heavily on how long the WSOP will stay in existence.

It makes a world of difference. If the online casinos get free entries to give away in exchange for promotion, the WSOP / WPT can cut them off. Then the online casinos would be faced with $10,000 (or more) PER entry in increased expenses they hadn't had to deal with in the past. This would certainly effect the number of entries they would give away from that point on, if any.

If the online casinos already pay full price on entries, then it would be less important.

Hi Tom,

Whence the delusion? I included as a possibility that poker was so different from golf that we would never see Tiger Woods-like dominance in poker. I didn't say that either possibility was more likely than the other. I simply solicited others' opinions on the issue.

Dimension, the satellite buyins are supposed to cover the cost of the seat. Since the online sites also take an additional fee I would think there is no discount. Besides if bug events gave discounts they would have to cover the costs out of their own budgets. I'm not positive but I would believe the majority of people get in through satellite's. So subsidizing them is out of the question.
