"If death is the end, we are not particularly special, not chosen, no different from a cosmic standpoint than any other livining creature."

It is enough to make one a vegetarian. If I have twenty chicken wings, that's 5 lives killed in one lunch.

How do atheists feel happy given their view that death is the end of their being?

[/ QUOTE ]

Why on earth should they feel happy about it?

Choosing between self-delusions or unhappiness is a common quandary.

One of the main motivations for religious belief is to avoid feeling bad about death. You can often tell a lot about a world model by looking at the motivation for its development.

having studied geology helps.

If you consider the age of the earth and the life expectancy of a human, lifetime is barely a twitch, so why fuss over an afterlife too? You spend too much time worrying to live for the gnats breath we have.

Thinking that one will exist forever in one form or another seems a bit egocentric.

Yeah, but it's still nice work if you can get it.

Good point. Now consider the age of the universe, and then the size of it.

I'll hold back my samples of "refutations" for geology and cosmology since they'll serve no purpose but to give maybe 100 people a good laugh, and then one guy will smugly reply about how ignorant I am in the eyes of Him.

I can only speak for myself but I'll go with "knowing I'm not wasting my life trying to appease what I consider to be a mythical being while others are."

I really tried to not sound like a smart ass there and that's the best I could do.
