Re: Poker\'s future -- internet and live
I am a Christian and a Poker player. This may seem like an oxymoron but it works for me. I refuse to believe I am the only Christian Poker player out there....

Re: Poker\'s future -- internet and live
but has there been any legislation to actually legalize internet gambling in the US?
No. First of all this couldn't happen anyway as the federal government has no jurisdiction over gambling. They can't ban it, they can't legalize it. That authority rests with the states. Right now, the only state I can think of the expressly forbids internet gambling is Nevada. The balance of state laws on gambling are vague to say the least. |

Re: Poker\'s future -- internet and live
While the federal govenrment's power to regulate gambling is certainly very limited, internet gambling, on the other hand, is far more likely to be subject to federal regulation due to its arguably interstate nature. The federal govenment has passed laws regulating child pornography and email spamming over the internet under the auspicies of regulating interstate and/or foreign commerce, and this rational for federal authority is likewise probably equally applicable to the regulation of internet gambling.* The big deal seems to be whether gambling with overseas operators implicates interstate commerce.
*Although the recent commerce clause jurisprudence has been somewhat restrictive, this case Raich v. Ashcroft presents a new opportunity for the Supreme Court to address the scope of Congress's authority to regulate under the commerce power. Though this is not an internet case, the tenor of the opinion may say something about how expansive the Supreme Court views the commerce power as internet gambling is not really interstate, but does lead to a indirect reduction in interstate commerce to the extent american dollars are siphoned overseas. In Raich the federal government argues that marijuana which is wholly grown in California effects interstate commerce because it reduces the demand for marijuana nationally, (using a Wickard v. Filburn analogy) thus the medicla marijuana cultivators actions effected interstate trade and were subject to Federal Regulation. |

Re: Poker\'s future -- internet and live
Who cares? If the internet were (and I don't give this a 2% chance) cut-off for Americans then the local, live games would go from where a decent player can win 1.5-2BB/hour to probably 2-3BB/hour. I can live with that.

Re: Poker\'s future -- internet and live
Actually Tim Berner's Lee did not invent the Internet. He invented the World Wide Web. The internet was already in existence, but was using character-based interfaces (Telnet, Gopher, FTP, etc.), long before the World Wide Web was around.

I often struggle with this. I think that proverbs has something about gambling in it. I wonder about the people who's lives have been destroyed in my quest (and many other's) to maximize my bb/100. I rationalize in my head that I am sitting and putting my money at risk with 9 other folks taking the same risk and letting luck/skill converge. I invest in the market, and never worry if that is a sin - yet again, I am taking my assets and putting them at risk. I tell myself this over and over again, yet, I never share the details of my hobby with the folks in my small group and church friends. I am too afraid that I will be cornered in some sort of confrontation where they will tell me that I need to quit and then continue to follow-up until I do. I really do not want to walk away from the income/revenue stream. So, I am in a real "don't ask, don't tell" situation. I would love to hear any other believer's take on this and how the reaction among Christian brother's has been. |

[ QUOTE ] but I'm still really stunned Ed Miller's book book could do this well -- shooting well into the Amazon Top 100. [/ QUOTE ] Phil Hellmuth's "Play Poker Like the Pros" is number 40 on this list so I don't think it's too crazy. [/ QUOTE ] The Amazon Top Sales List is not what you think, its a ranking system, which means SSHE is selling equally with the top 100 percentile books. No doubt its impressive, but there are many other books that share that same ranking. In da club [img]/images/graemlins/club.gif[/img] |
