Re: does anyone remember \"george\"?
"Considering the Slovenian government funds poker players/research and assuming a good part of these players are associated with Izmet Fekali and his group, this is a definite possiblity."
"Or simply a winning bot that makes some mistakes. That would definitely be a plausible explanation" If the first quote is correct, then so is the second. Tonda would be proud. |

Re: How Does Derb Play?
[ QUOTE ]
the general 'how does he play' is loose aggressive. plays many more hands than usual (liberal cold-calling with hands in late position that might be dominated), raises many more hands than usual, and makes regular plays for the pot like heads up threebets on the turn with far from stellar holdings. such tactics are not popular online, even in moderation, because the 'anonymous' and hyper-aggressive nature of the games promotes liberal calldowns. [/ QUOTE ] I pretty much agree with this general assessment. A couple of quirks I've noticed are: He doesn't attempt to steal blinds as much as you'd expect given his loose aggressive nature, but he defneds his own blinds liberally. He seems to play really tight and straightforward in multiway pots, but he often gets out of line heads up. When he has been betting the whole way, he'll often just automatically bet the river. Even in situations where it seems very apparant that no worse hand will call and no better hand will fold. He'll get out of line with loose/speculative/bluffy raises on the flop and the turn, but not really on the river. On the river he seems to bet very liberally and call very liberally though. Preflop, when you break his stats down by position, he seems to open nearly as many pots in early position as he does in middle or late. UTG raises with Axo, Q8s and the like aren't uncommon. |

Re: does anyone remember \"george\"?
[ QUOTE ]
Considering the Slovenian government funds poker players/research and assuming a good part of these players are associated with Izmet Fekali and his group, this is a definite possiblity. [/ QUOTE ] Can somebody confirm this whole Slovenia thing? I remember reading the following Abdul post awhile ago and I (along with most of RGP) assumed it was a joke: [ QUOTE ] As I posted previously, I have been living in Ljubljana, Slovenia for much of the last year. The winter was a bit hard to take, with the last snow less than two weeks ago. And this language is so hard for me to learn. But I'm living the dream of a professional nomadic online poker player, and I look forward to some balmy nights playing poker by the Adriatic. I don't even bother with travelling to Vienna for live poker any more, because of the opportunity cost for three hours travel time each way. Plus, Europeans smoke like there is no tomorrow. So, I much prefer to play online. It's kind of old news, but in case you haven't heard, the Slovenian government is sponsoring a program to train poker players. Slovenia is a socialist country, at least by American standards, and the government seems to like to waste money. The government also sponsors billiards players. The Slovenian poker players have funding for computer simulations. They get free airfare to travel to tournaments. When you see them in big games you can be sure they are playing with government money. The whole thing strikes me as a bit like fusion... sure it works, but the amount of money the Slovenian government is investing is far more than the money they get out. That could change, though, since a big part of the research is bots. I know at least one bot here is ready for action. Someone here showed me figures suggesting that as much as 1% of the Slovenian GNP could come from poker bots playing online poker in the future. I am concerned that a country (albeit a tiny one) would so aggressively pursue money that is for some a fun pasttime and for others a serious career. Are we moderated yet? -- Abdul [/ QUOTE ] |

Re: How Does Derb Play?
[ QUOTE ]
On the river he seems to bet very liberally [/ QUOTE ] I agree with your analysis except for the above. People seem to want to pidgeonhole him as a hyper-aggressive player, but this is not quite true. His aggression definitely does not carry over to the river. I've replayed a bunch of his hands and see him consistently missing value bets on the river, even after being the last aggressor on the turn. I almost get the feeling that his game plan is to get to the showdown at all costs, employing aggression liberally, but to give up on the river if the situation is unclear. -v |

I've seen him sometimes miss bets where I wouldn't have with middle or bottom pair or a small pp in situations where he's likely ahead and will probably get called by A-high, BUT he's not missing a ton of very clear value bets or anything like that. What I meant is he'll often bet in spots where a bet serves no readily apparent purpose, and as others have pointed out in previous threads, he'll call when his hand has basically no chance of ever being good. |
