This is a very common mistake in NL games. Though you were correct to call, your implied odds are not that high, even against this player. Your statement would only be true if you could get his whole stack in the middle every time you flopped a set, and never lose when that happened.

In reality, you'll have trouble getting action sometimes, you'll lose with a set sometimes, and you'll win less than the max sometimes due to a scary board.

The question you should ask yourself when faced with this raise from a probable big pair is, "Are my implied odds such that I'll win more than 8 times this $300 on average when I connect?" The answer here is clearly yes.

If he cant fold overpairs just move in on the flop.
