The correct answer for this year is a movie that couldn't even get nominated for best documentary: Hoop Dreams.

Great movie, no doubt! Should of won (and been nominated) for best documentary. IIRC, this was somewhat of a scandal and actually changed the way the nomination votes were done.

BUT, I still don't think it is is close to Shawshank, Gump, or Pulp Fiction, and has a somewhat select viewing audience.

My vote here was Shawshank Redeption followed closely by Forrest Gump, then Pulp Fiction.

As stated earlier... WHAT A YEAR for films!

1) Pulp Fiction
2) Forrest Gump
3) Shawshank

Four Weddings and a Funeral wasn't that great, and I haven't see Quiz Show.

1983 was the year that did it for me. Ghandi won over E.T. One of the several times Spielberg got screwed.

Hoop Dreams is a great film and it outclasses Gump, Pulp Fiction and Shawshank.

Forrest Gump, Pulp Fiction and Shawshank Redemption are overrated.

I don't there's really much question that Pulp Fiction is the 'best' movie..but Forest Gump is, without question, going to win the Oscar everytime...it's just one of those movies. see: English Pacient, Titanic, Braveheart, etc.

I think the title is a little misleading, since it should be the best 1994 film. The films were released in 1994. Definetely, one of the best years in oscar history, 4 wed and a fun is a good movie, but the other 4 are masterpieces.

When Forrest Gump inexplicably won this over Pulp Fiction and Shawshank Redemption, I put the Oscars on probation.

When Julia Roberts beat Ellen Burstyn for best actress, that's when I officially dropped the Oscars from my consciousness.

Even though Pulp Fiction is my favorite of these films and perhaps the most groundbreaking, I would have been OK if Shawshank had won, because it's pretty damn great as well.

Forrest Gump winning just made me want to puke.
